OK.....There's GOOD news and BAD news.
The GOOD news is that now I know what the inside of an Unadilla W2AU 4:1 Balun looks like. The BAD news is that I really didn't want to find out about it this way. So, I'm doing some purely cosmetic touch up on some heat shrink covering the antenna connections to the balun. I say to myself, Self, it sure would be easier to put new heatshrink on without desoldering the joint. How about unscrewing the eyebolt where the antenna wire connects and slip a fresh piece of heatshrink right over the crimped on ring connector. After doing so, imagine my surprise when I hear a rattling noise inside the balun. The nuts inside the darned thing are not captive! DOH!!! 
I'm going to bed. I'll fix it tomorrow.

Well, several things about this little mishap...
That is some HEAVY wire... and I have no doubt as to the balun's high power rating of "a full 2000 watts". Also, it appears that it is well soldered. Interesting that is is not a toroid type core. You can put it back together, no problem. Put a little blue locktite on the eyebolt threads. |

AFM posted one not long ago, an "Ugly Balun", I think. Yeah, but the "Ugly Balun" is a "1:1" balun, not a 4:1 matching balun as you have there, needed for the Carolina Windom. An Ugly Balun is really an RF choke to kill RF on the coax shield. You can make that by winding some of the coax on a cylindrical form, or you can use a series of ferrite beads. The number of wraps of coax, or the amount of beads depends on the operating frequency. |

OK, I just gotta ask... why did you think you needed more shrink tubing? or insulation?
Don't you think that if it was needed, the manufacturer would have put it on there? Just a thought. On the other hand... I have a thing for heat shrink. I look around for places to use it.

I tried to get a line up into the trees. FAIL. Used a tennis ball with a 1/2" bolt, 3-1/2" long. The branch I was aiming for was too far for my 49 YO guns!
So, gonna try either a bow and arrow, or buy one of those EZ-Hang slingshots. ETA: The beer's for medicinal purposes.

I then tie my actual support rope to the pull string. Pull that back thru. It is easier to use the intermediate pull string than trying to use the light weight fishing line to pull support rope. I use a florescent pull string. Usually can find it around masonry tool section at Home Depot or Lowes or the rope sections at WalMart. As I am hoisting antenna if I find I am under a limb or obstruction, I toss the pull string with a weight attached across the antenna or support rope close to the obstruction. Bring the weighted end down so you can reach it. Now with both end of string in your hand you can manipulate the antenna however you need to so it clears obstruction. |

Frank, club secretary and hubby of club president Jackie, uses a fly rod. "Where do you want it?" And a precise cast puts the fishing weight over a limb right exactly where it is wanted.
Once over, he ties some cord on the line by the weight and reels it back over the limb. Now the cord is tied to the insulator on the end of the wire antenna, and the antenna is hoisted into position. No muss, no fuss. |
