Used a couple of ideas from A_Free_Man and CJan_NH.
Tripod and 6-18' telescoping mast with guy rings cut out from WallyWorld cutting board. Arrow J-Pole on the way. May make a mount for the roll-up Slim Jim J-Pole also. 
The 4-foot mast that came with the tripod was removed and used to mount the Diamond X50NA in the attic more securely.

hey that's great... do you make one with a spackling knife on the end? we got a couple of drywall nails jutting out of the vaulted ceiling 16 feet overhead. can you come over with that doohickey, patch over the area, then put some 180grit paper on that disc and sand it smooth? thanks, big help. ar-jedi

(Looks like the one CJan_NH used.) It's a 3-section, 6-18' fiberglass and aluminum pole. Specifications: 1-1/4" (3.2 cm) Fiberglass Handle, 1" (2.5 cm) & 7/8" (2.2 cm) Aluminum Tubes. Found mine at a local hardware store in Indy. Home Depot and Lowes had them also, but none in stock at the time. Mr. LongArm #6618 Need to open up the center holes on the guy rings to fit and drill holes to attach the "hi-vis" 550 cords and stakes. |
It's cold and rainy outside....so I decided to experiment a little inside. 
That's the roll up Dual Band 2m 70cm Slim Jim from N9TAX hanging from a "custom-made mount" about 18' up in our foyer. 
FT-60R connected to this antenna easily reached (3) local repeaters.

I had made some from aluminum angles & PVC pipes, etc. I think it came out to $50.- when all was said and done (wrong cuts, sizes, hole positions, etc. picture Mr. Bean trying to make his own antenna tripod  )You got me thinking of using a slim jim in the attic for my 2m/70cm antenna. You got me thinking of using a slim jim in the attic for my 2m/70cm antenna. Thanks for the tips! I thought the same thing about the windows!
I bet the Slim Jim would work very well in the attic. Or the Arrow J-Pole that should be here in the next few days. My game plan, though, is to keep the Slim Jim in my Get Home Bag with my HT. The Arrow J-Pole will live on the tripod/extension pole set up for the Emcomm Box when out and about, and when at home, the Diamond X50NA in the attic is used. |

The extension pole you purchased is the exact same one I used for my own EMCOMM antenna-it works fantastic. I used the exact same Wal-Mart cutting board you did Thanks CJan. After seeing the ones you and AFM made, I had to assimilate it.

I like this construction where you have a cage inserted into the plastic container. To service or use it on the bench, you can leave it in the container or lift it all out. Has anybody seen more emcomm box constructions like this? I'd really like to avoid puncturing the plastic container (for waterproofing). |

I purposely have not bolted the cutting board the power supply and batteries are attached to to the bottom of the box because of this same concern. I have been exploring the use of 3M Dual Lock fasteners for this application. But unless the box is in standing water for prolonged periods, the rubber sealed bolt holes should be sufficient for keeping the water out. I think ar-jedi tested his box in a water filled bath tub with no leakage. My own box traveled "over the river and through the woods, to Grandmothers house" on Thanksgiving in the bed of my Honda Ridgeline so I could show it to my Dad, AA9FM. Misty cold rain the whole way. Inside of box remained nice and dry. Good enough for the intended use IMHO.

On the 3M Dual Lock fasteners, I can already tell you the backing adhesive can't hold the weight of the radio. I've tried in a vertical application to mount my mobile radio to my center console. It was a 3x6 in sq application and the backing adhesive peeled off after a week. The fasteners were still tight together, it was a b*tch trying to pry them apart I've also tried the heavy duty dual tape (found in Home Deport), same thing happened, can't hold the weight of the radio and peeled off after a week. I ended up drilling (figure I can patch 4 small holes with colored silicone adhesive if I remove the radio later). Thanks for the real-world test & evaluation report!!! |

I may still try some out since I'm not holding any real weight suspended. The cutting board is usually setting a little less than 90 degrees in the operating position with the weight supported by a couple of foam stand offs under the bottom edge of the batteries and power supply. ***ETA*** I didn't read your post completely. Maybe the adhesive won't hold in this case also. May have to drill holes for bolts after all.

This is the UnUn I made following ar-jedi's excellent pics of KC8AON's Design. It's an impedence matching transformer for a random wire antenna I'm planning on using.

This may look like a pool cue in the first couple of pics, but it's a 20' telescoping Crappie Pole that's going to be used as a support for one end of a random wire antenna. The plan is to orient the wire as a sloper on top of the fence at the back of our yard. As you can see, it's pretty hard to see the extended pole. It's beside the left post of the gate in the left corner of our yard. The HOA and CCRs are restrictive against antennas, so this is my attempt at getting around the Nazis. The wire is 26AWG with black insulation to increase the stealth factor as much as possible. The wire is not installed yet in the pic, just highlighted where it will be. It's 50' long with a 50' counterpoise. The right end of the wire will go all the way to the corner post behind the playhouse.

I'm waiting for my company bonus check to show up on the 15th, part of which I plan to buy an IC-703+. In the mean time, I found a couple of these camping laundry reels and rewound each of them with 50' of 26AWG hookup wire. With the addition of a pair of banana plugs, they turned into my DIY version of a YoYo Tenna Deluxe.

depending on how, and how much, you operate, you may want to look into providing additional air circulation for the radios inside the box. the easiest way to do this is have an opening above the radios which promotes natural convection airflow of the buoyant hot air.
the way i did it for a friend of mine is simple. it was so perfect that i was dumbstruck that i hadn't had the idea sooner since i had used similar parts on several other projects. the solution i came upon is called a deckplate. a deckplate is a ring with a removable insert used in marine applications to cover access ports, valves, and so on. they come in all different sizes,from a few inches to a foot and a half in diameter. they are made of plastic, stainless, and sometimes brass. the plastic type was my choice for weight reasons. the redeeming feature of the deckplate is that with the removable plate part in place, the entire assembly is completely watertight. there is a UV-proof silicone rubber gasket around the perimeter to ensure this. note there are two types of deckplates, one type which you pry the insert out and the other type where the insert itself screws in with about 180-270 degrees of rotational travel. you want the screw-in type for your project. they come out and are put in by hand with ease. deckplates are defined by the final size opening, so a 4" deckplate has an opening which will pass a 4" hose or such. the hole you need to drill to mount the deckplate will be somewhat larger. so... –– purchase a 4" deck plate at a marine store or via the internet. they come white, black, clear. the clear looks cool. Beckson is a popular, quality brand. a 4" plastic screw-in deckplate is about $5-$7 or so. –– obtain a 4.5" diameter hole saw and arbor. –– take the radio mounting bar out, and select a location above and behind the radios. –– drill the hole (piece of cake in the plastic sidewall). –– mount the deckplate using the supplied stainless screws and a bit of sensor-safe silicone sealant around the perimeter. –– reinstall radio bar etc. this is a 15 minute project improvement once you have the deck plate and the hole saw/arbor. ar-jedi

The (4) powerpole assy outputs + (1) for each of the radios. I thought a marine bus bar like this one from Blue Sea Systems would neaten it up. I have yet to use more than 2 of the 4 assy outputs at the same time.

Question:
Why carry two source of power? The Samlex and Battery Tender + Battery....... I've been running my gear hooked directly to the battery, then I plug my battery charger in when I have AC.... Often I have the gear consuming from the battery at the same time that the battery charger is supplying voltage... True, it is not an ideal siuation for the battery - but it works out fine. My battery charger is a three stage and it seems to adapt immediatly to any consumption on the battery. |
