Underwater board areas equal to about 4% of sail area are pretty typical on a sailboat of that type. Look at any of the popular sailboats in this size range, Lazer, Sunfish, Optimist etc. and you'll see a foil of about the same size. The giant keels found on some bluewater yachts are serving multiple functions not necessary in a smaller boat. |
I started building a bolger Windsprint summer of 2008... I ran into a problem on the hull and stopped Your thread here, forum.woodenboat.com, and a dream I had last night of launching and having problems x100 out my ass have prompted me to maybe get back on track. It has been sitting in my backyard under a tarp and if it is salvageable I might have to start working on it again. I have pictures back on my home computer and I get back from school on thursday.

I will take a few pictures when I'm done sanding and have finished vacuuming up all of the dust. After that I'm going to paint on a layer of epoxy with white pigment and then flip the hull! |

Do not use fast hardener when it is 80 degrees. That shit almost went critical!
Sanding fiberglass is a bitch... Get your fiends to do it.

Man, that looks outstanding. Great job on the finishing! You should send Chuck at Duckworks some pics, he'ld publish them.
Yeah, epoxy, fiberglass and wood dust everywhere, I know that too well. LOL @ the epoxy kicking off hard! I've done that so many times I can't count. Scary when it starts smoking! 
Edit: So are you hooked yet? It's alot like BRD, I know many guys who are planning their next one before they are finished with the current one. |

I couldn't do that when it was on the jig. Probably overkill, but that's how I'm doing everything on this project. |

The update is that after flipping the boat and going on vacation I have gotten back to working on it. I have sanded all of the seams on the inside where the epoxy came through so that epoxy applied to the inside will adhere. I haven't posted an update yet because it pretty much looks the same. So anyways I was hoping to fiberglass the inner seams this weekend and post an update but my usual helpers are busy. I guess it will have to wait until next weekend. |
This update probably doesn't look too big but please compare it to the previous picture of the inside. The hull seams have now been glassed inside and out. What a PITA

I've found that using the plastic reduces sanding. 
Plastic applied: 
The same seam with plastic removed after curing. When the plastic is on top it seems to prevent the fiberglass from floating over the epoxy and exposing the fiberglass texture. Yay less sanding! 
That shit peels right off BTW

Just got home from work and I'm about to spend some time on the boat. Kind of a shitty day at work so I'll probably be drinking heavily - I hope everything is still level when I look at it tomorrow I have the Transom about half on. I'll update when I get it all glassed on.
