what's the general consensus for zero on your .22lr hunting rifle. I have a Remington 597 with a vortex crossfireII 2-7x32 on it.

There is none. 25, 35, 50, 75 are all common.

I would say to sight in at distance you will be shooting. If that is variable, or for hunting,  try 50-75.

FWIW, when my kids were little and we did target shooting, we sighted at 25 and shot at 25. I wouldn't site at 25 for hunting unless my shots were going to be at 25.

Zero mine on the distance I plan to shoot a squirrel.  Usually 25 yards.

It also depends on the sight height of your scope/sights above the barrel. If the sight height is high, then your zero range would be longer. Measure your gun sight height, then play around with some of the ballistic table programs and figure what is best for you.

I like 30 yards just for squirrel.  25 yards would work nearly as well but I seem to have shot a lot at that height so that is what I sight in for on my home range. Then walk the oaks and old hickories along the fence lines.

I do well with 50yds on my 22LRs and 17HMR.

As far as hunting goes, I know to just aim high (use some intuition here) out to about 35 with the 22s. Will hit squirrel out to 60 or so easily.

I normally just use the 17 on groundhog, and with the larger target, I can just aim high out to 100. IIRC I’m about an inch low at 100. With a mild height over bore, it’s not really that far off.

I’m not interested in being above my LOS on most guns. For most practical distances, even with a centerfire, I find it easier to just always have to aim up.

I zero at 50y with ammo I'm most likely to use and then shoot 4 groups with other ammo, hp. Subsonic, copper hp, etc on 12x18 shoot and see target.  I snap a photo of the ammo box next to the corresponding group at 25y, 50y, and 100y to have a quick drop reference depending on which ammo I'm hunting with.

I’ve played around with a ballistic calculator and found that a  32 yard zero works best for me.

This is shooting standard velocity 1070 fps.

Just sighted in this last weekend.
