Good question, but who knows really.   A good friend of mine emailed them (Wolf) last year about it and their reply was that it would be out in February of 2011.  It ain't here yet, but then they've been supposedly going to have it for a number of years so far.  No result.  I do believe they intend to actually bring it to market, but who knows if/when it'll actually happen.

I would say never, but then again I just recieved my Ares Defense Systems "Shrike" upper a couple of weeks ago and that took an 8.5 year wait.  So maybe Wolf will surprise us eventually too.

In what way will this augment my ability to "render inoperative armed opponents" and break things...? (Gotta stay PC for work... don'tchya'know....)

Wolf Performance Ammunition is currently working on bringing 6.5mm Grendel steel case ammunition to market.
The delay was caused by Tula Cartridge Works, not Wolf. Wolf has switched ammunition manufacturers and they
are currently working on this project. They are saying they will have ammunition later this year.

Somehow I doubt that the steel cases will be a ton cheaper than the brass cased ones.  Hopefully they will be much cheaper, but my guess is that they won't produce them in enough quantity to justify cheap prices.

Well, what's cheap enough? $8/20? I would expect price to be under $10/20, since brass cased is only $12 or so.

Cheap ammo is always welcome regardless of weather it is steel cased or brass cased.  To date we have seen continuous improvement in the 120MPT both in accuracy and in cleanliness. A $1 per box reduction is not to be ignored.

David and Wolf have somewhat let the cat out of the bag early on the steel case. With the case shape we have and the operating pressures we have held the cartridge and the chamber were designed from the onset with the potential to run steel cases. While the route to market for any new manufacturer is time consuming we have already secured agreements for the preliminary batches and hope that this will take place in a reasonable time frame. The intention is to price this per 7.62x39 and it should be an FMJ.

On the subject of FMJ projectiles we have been requested by one of our customers to examine an enhanced FMJ loading in a green format for certain applications. It is hopeful that there will ultimately be a spill over of this into the general market.

Well, if they can get them down to 7.62x39 prices I will be thrilled.  However, I can't help but be skeptical simply because nothing has ever matched the prices of 7.62.  If brass cased wolf is $12 a box then I would just buy brass cased if the steel couldnt beat $10 per box.  $8 may actually be doable.

Im in for a couple thousand if it is $8/20 or less.  I think more than anything the problem will be importing enough of the cheaper ammo.

I really want to see the steal-case get below $.50/rd. I would love to be able to run a carbine class with my Grendel, then shoot a precision rifle class a few weeks later just by throwing some LaRue LEVER mounts. That would be entirely awesome.

You really want to see an explosion of 6.5 rifles (no pun intended) get the ammo down to 7.62X39 prices and watch the hordes stampede.  The unavailability of cheap(ish) ammo is what's kept me from pulling the trigger on a 6.5 for so long.

x39 is only cheap because of the proliferation of steel-cased surplus.

Given that no military anywhere uses the 6.5, I don't see surplus happening.

$300 per 500 rounds really isn't that bad.  That same money will buy you 1000 rounds of 5.56 or 750 rounds of .308.  However, both of those are surplus prices.
So sure, the 6.5 isn't exactly plink-worthy at this point, but it's not awful either.  And as people pick it up, the prices will fall.

very little of the steel case 7.62x39mm on the market is surplus.
It's new production commercial ammunition.
The same basic case, primer and possibly powder (depending upon bullet weight) utilized to load
7.62x39mm steel case can be utilized to load 6.5mm Grendel steel case. The projectile will be
lighter and so use less raw materials to produce than a 7.62x39mm projectile.....

Bill, that would be outstanding!  Steel case, FMJ Grendel at less than 50 cents a round would sure turn a lot of heads.  I believe that same ammo near 20-25 cents a round in quantity would be an industry changer for the 6.x AR15-length rounds.  If folks can plink with 6.5 Grendel for at or near 7.62x39 prices, you're gonna put smiles on a whole bunch of faces and sell as much ammo as you can import.

Not that it matters at the price point you mentioned, but what weight FMJ bullet and velocity?  Personally, I'd prefer a slug in the 115-120 grain range in front of a relatively mild load.  If I'm using the round for plinking or for fouling the tube before running handloads, I don't need a round that pushes the pressure envelope.  I just want something that goes "bang" and makes a slightly louder hit on steel than .223.

I bet a dime to a donut that quite a few folks are watching this thread intently.

I certainly am. I cant get the ammo directly from a shop up here in Alaska. I am willing to be if the price of the ammo goes down more, people will be asking for it. We do not have a Alexander Arms Rep (store that sells em) anywhere in Alaska. We do have a guy that has a website that says he can order them  for us and only charges $35 dollars + AA's price which isnt bad.

I'm pretty sure that info is on Wolf's website.. IIRC it's a 110 grain FMJ @ about 2600fps (don't remember the barrel length).
