I got a new Magpul DAKA 44" rifle case . I like it enough, the grid "foam" system is growing on me, pretty useful. Latches are super nice. Only one problem: The three different models of Master padlocks that I'd been using for years on my Pelican, Stormcase, Plano, etc. cases won't fit in Magpul's recessed lock housings. Magpul says they "recommend a lock with a 5/16" thick shackle and a 1-1.5" interior", but apparently all my locks are just on the just-slightly-smaller side of this for the shackle clearance. So off to Home Depot and Amazon I go, and saw tons of super-long 2.5"+ shackles that are way too big, and tons of padlocks that have around a 1" shackle clearance (which is close enough to what I have that don't work... don't want to buy some to find out they're the same size. I calipered the opening of mine and they're .93"). * I don't need super-secure, but Lock Picking Lawyer shouldn't be laughing as he pops them 20 seconds in, either, I guess. Trying to keep little kids out, not stop James Bond. * I need combination locks, not keyed. I share this case with family members and not everyone is going to be carrying their own set of keys. * Would like it to be inexpensive for a two-pack. Under $45 seems reasonable, cheaper preferred. * Prefer small as possible, lighter weight: heavy enough case and contents. Again, step past TSA locks, but don't need a five lb behemoth either. So, with those general qualifications, what's the Hive's advice for master race of combo locks? These Masters looked pretty good, almost pulled the trigger on them until I saw YouTube of the man picking them in ten seconds .  |
