Considering a Larue Stealth barrel.  I had originally planned on using a stainless barrel in 1:7" twist.  The Larue is 1:8" twist and is made from "Bearden Steel" (or at least it has this name stamped on the barrel).

Anyone familiar with Bearden Steel?  What is it and what makes it a good steel for an AR-15 barrel?

I want a 16" barrel.  How heavy a bullet can I shoot using a 1:7" twist with a 16" barrel?

Thanks!

LaRue's 1/8 barrels shoot MK262 fine.  Really fine.  An AR magazine will limit the bullet before the barrel will, so 77 is about as heavy as you can really go.

The 82 grain VLD Berger, which is far too long to be loaded to magazine length, lists an optimum twist rate of 1:7.

The Larue's 1:8 is fast enough for anything that will fit in a magazine.

Larue has not acknowledged what steel they use for their barrels. Like many Larue products, they keep most information proprietary and operate on the "just trust us" method.

Thinking seriously about the Larue barrel.  Have planned on using stainless all along.  What will I give up or gain accuracy wise by switching from stainless to the Larue steel barrel?

Larues accuracy is well documented, plus at $225 sale price it can't be beat, your bigger decision should be Stealth or predaTar. And what length

Just get one. Stealth is a heavy barrel. Figure out what length you want then heavy barrel or not. Stealth uses a .750 block, predatar uses a .625

The barrels are also cut for a 3 set screw locking gas block. You will have to use a LaRue block or SLR makes adjustable ones with the proper screw spacing if you want adjustable.

SLR rifleworks also makes a non-adjustable lopro block with Larue set-screw spacing

I will be buying a 16" barrel.

So tell me the about the differences between the Predator and the Stealth.  What are the accuracy, weight, and "handiness" trade=offs between these two choices using a 16" barrel?  Which would you choose and why?

Stealth is a medium barrel, not heavy......correct?  And it has a medium taper?

The stealth compared to the Tar would be like comparing a heavy to a pencil in my opinion. Unless you are shooting a ton in one day, I don't think you will see much change in accuracy.

Good, I don't want a heavy, target barrel.  Anyone have weights of the Stealth and Predator barrels?  That would help me choose.  I didn't see weights listed on LaRue's website.

I would NOT call it a pencil barrel. It has a thin profile in front of the gas block, but has much more thickness behind the gas block than a pencil barrel does.  The tAR barrel balances very well. The Stealth is a fat pig by comparison.
