Looking for a spotting scope and strongly considering Vortex. I actually placed an order for a Gen 1 Viper HD through Cabelas and they canceled it, which is frustrating. Obviously the "tiers" are Crossfire-Diamondback HD- Viper HD - Razor, but what else do I need to know about the differences between them? I used the product finder tool on your website and feel confident that I don't need a Razor but want to make sure the money is well spent. Where is the point of diminishing returns? Use case: range use, watching and classifying whitetails, and spotting for varmints. Do I owe it to myself to go up to the Viper or will I be satisfied with the Diamondback HD? 65mm vs 85mm performance? I'm a spotter newbie, educate me please! ETA: I have Diamondback HD 10x42 binoculars that I'm fairly pleased with, they're not amazing but they punch above their price point. If you can use that glass as a comparison that would be great! |

Hi there and thank you for reaching out! What's standing out to us is that you'll want to use your spotter at the range. To reliably see bullet holes on paper at 100-200 yards, we'd recommend the 85mm Razor. It takes a great optic to see such small holes at great distances. If you're shooting shoot and show targets, the Viper would certainly suffice. Long-winded way of saying yes, we do think you owe it to yourself to step up to at least the Viper. In terms of aperture size, the larger the better with spotting scopes. We could recommend 85mm in whatever you end up choosing. Again, to get the image quality it sounds like you're looking for, we'd definitely recommend going with a Viper at the very least.
