Brownells changed the 901 BCG and barrel assembly to being discontinued and no longer backorderable. Okay, NOW I'm getting concerned about the future of the platform.
Glad I got the extra BCG at least. |

Interestingly, Colt lists a "Modular Carbine" rifle in 7.62X51 and 6.5 Creedmor with the M-Lok rail that will accept other receivers for different calibers without tools. Looks like what we have come to recognize and refer to as a 901 series rifle.
They show as Out Of Stock. I'll remain cautiously optimistic that Colt will begin production and sales once they've fulfilled their contract orders that are occupying production lines at this time. I like the price. Optimistically, if Colt does start sales & distribution they'll be supported with maintenance parts. Also interesting ...there are NO 901 parts, none available anywhere, poof, gone. 'Someone' is hording parts and betting on their increased price related to availability or 'someone' is stocking an armory. Or, 'someone' is quietly removing parts to comply with contract requirements. |

Arms Unlimited has complete Colt 901 BCGs for sale for $300. That’s not a bad price for something that will soon be unobtainium.

Opinions needed please.
I am considering selling a new 6.5CM upper. I've decided to keep the lower. What would be a realistic price for the upper with BCG and latch? What would be a realistic price for the upper less BCG and latch? I would appreciate your input. |

Just got off the phone with Tony at Precision Reflex. They have a limited run of gas buster charging handles available for the Colt 901/ CM762. They’re not on the website yet but call them up and place your order. Two configurations available. Limited run only so get yours before they run out.
|
|
|
@RFingers
Is one of those configurations ambi bychance? |
|
|
Unfortunately they’re just standard Gas Buster charging handles. Acording to Sean at PRI, there are no plans to make an ambi version charging handle for this platform to date. They only made a very small batch of about 30 total gas busters for these rifles. 15 or so with the standard military latch and the same number with the combat latch.
|
|
|
Thanks for the heads up RFinger, I snagged one and they have a few left.
I do have some interesting news on the platform, I spoke to Colt CS earlier today on a separate issue and the rep confirmed they were returning to commercial production and that parts availability would return after they begin building the CM7 and CM65 again. Also, NO parts of ANY kind from Colt Canada's C20 will be imported by Colt. I spoke to Kole over at Ordinance Research and he is exploring doing a run of 901/CM7/65 parts to wring some more precision out of the gun, specifically, bolts, barrels, barrel nut wrenches, etc. It might take a year or so, but its great that there is interest in the platform still. |

The FDE one is rare, I’ve seen one ever on gun broker. The FDE and the 18inch barrel one are crazy rare, I don’t even think the 18inch one was ever made of it was maybe ten or so.
But I finally got the time to get my 901 zeroed with the Accupower 1-8. With a Surefire socom brake if feels like shooting a carbine length 5.56. I’m using a 50yd zero with 168gr amax. I’m making my heavy division debut at a charity match in June. Should be fun making fun of the PIstol Caliber Carbine guys. Senior citizens, women, kids, or you recently had shoulder surgery are the only demographics that should be shooting PCC in matches. |

So I found out something interesting today. The Colt LE901 adapter kit to use a 5.56 upper is not compatible with the Colt IAR upper. The IAR’s huge heat sink handguard has an angle at the rear that prevents the upper from locking in place on the LE901 lower with the adapter.

I got pretty excited when I learned that PRI made a gas buster charging handle for the 901. The excitement waned when my handle arrived. PRI did not change any of the geometry of their charging handle on the backend to account for the 901’s taller charging handle. As a result there is a gap between the top of the lower and the bottom of the charging handle. You can watch the carrier key move back and forth with the rifle shouldered. It won’t be busting gas anytime soon.
Not sure if PRI intends to resolve the issue but an RMA was easy to get. |

Ran mine in a 3gun match today. Took 12th out of 37. I was the only guy running a 308, it felt good hitting steel at 250yds. Makes it move a lot more and sounds a lot better. With a brake the 901 if a fairly soft shooting rifle.

Anyone using a different buffer system with the CM762/LE901 series? Like the A5 or something?
My CM762 slings M80 brass to about 1 o'clock with OEM A2 Flashhider and shortie OEM 308 buffer spring / buffer. |

View Quote No, but experimenting with an A5 is at the top of my list of things I want to toy with on the platform once I get another lower. Buffer system seems the most obvious and easiest area for improvement tweaks on the platform. |
|
|
Which heavy buffer setups are you guys running?
|
|
|
I took the OEM Colt 308 buffer apart thinking I might be able to increase the weight with some other parts I had around from H2/3 buffers, but no luck with that. The 2 internal pieces were heavier than anything in them.
Heavy Buffers has some options - either a heavier short buffer to keep the carbine RE or a longer buffer to work with the A5 setup. Pricey though (and I'm not known for being cheap either). $125 for the heavier 6.5oz short buffer or $140 for the 8.5 oz that works with the A5 RE (plus of course $40-60 for an A5 RE). Not sure if I'm going to try those or go with a muzzle brake of some kind first. |

I have a few questions about the LE901. I used to own one, regret selling it but money was tight. I have seen that, in the past, they sold the lower receivers separately and the complete 6.5 creed upper separately. I have also seen Brownells carry the upper receiver minus the lower hand guard portion. Will they sale the products again in this manner this time with the necessary parts to finish a complete upper so someone could do other variant builds based upon .308 cartridge family and sell the lower separately so one could initially make a pistol build for ar15 uppers?

Received a SpringCo Orange, made to be an extra power 308 carbine spring, and will give it a try this weekend. With the OEM 308 setup, PPU M80 is consistently slinging fast to 1:30.
After that I may try a Heavy Buffers 6.5 oz, as I don't think the 5.5 will do much since my OEM from Colt is 5.11oz. Still loving the rifle, mine just seems a tad overgassed as delivered. |

Keep us updated. I ran mine again in a 3gun match. Looking back at videos the spot where I see the biggest difference between my normal 3gun rifle and my 901 is on plate racks with a rifle. My follow up shots are a lot slower. But funny story on one of the stages we had two 3 plate racks on either side of the bay and the first one I hit one of the plates with enough force to knock it down and then right back up (counted as a penalty for me) and then the other side I actually broke one of the plates by knocking it out of the groove to hold it.

Since the price drop of the CM762-16S, they are pretty much sold out everywhere. Does anyone know if Colt plans on manufacturing more or are they discontinued. I do regret not buying another when the prices dropped. Also if I were to find a used one at a gun show or online, what is a reasonable price to expect to pay? I fear I will have to pay a premium price now that they are nowhere to be found?

Tried my CM762 with PPU M80 and the Red Spinco which is an XP for AR10 with Carbine REs.
Initially for about 10 rounds, it seemed to run well, with softer ejection to about 2:30 instead of aggressively to 1-1:30. Then I started to have a couple of bolt over base misfeeds, where round ejected but obviously the stronger buffer spring was not giving the magazine sufficient time to get the next round in position to feed, or the magazine spring tension wasn't enough to get the round up. Did this with two magazines, (D&H steel which haven't had issues previously through a modest 300 rounds). I was going to try two PMAG LRs but the turret on the NXS slipped (didn't tighten it down enough after setting the zero stop), so I lost interest in dealing with both of those issues at the end of an otherwise fun range session with my son (even in the FL heat). Even with the issues, we did get to ring steel at 350 with it, so it was still fun to shoot but always frustrating to have these things happen. Got home, swapped back to OEM buffer spring and fixed the elevation turret; need to get back out to the range to confirm it's back to 100% function and the true zero hasn't been screwed up. Not sure what I'll try next, been thinking of a Surefire Procomp or AAC Brakeout 2.0 (when I can find one). I have an SDN6 suppressor I could run on this but likely won't mess with that until it cools down this fall. |
