| So now that S&W have brilliantly and independently discovered the commercial value of an AR15 chambered in 5.45x39 are there any plans to dust off the old stocks of Alexander Arms Genghis rifles? Seems Bill Alexander is a man before his time. A funny side note...I watched a program on TV the other day which featured a well known gun writer extolling the virtues of the 5.45x39 M&P and praising the forward thinking of the folks at S&W, but wait here's the funny part, I seem to remember the same writer doing an article about AA's Genghis in Shotgun News several years ago. Maybe my memory fails me... |

I am afraid that his is a caliber that we will not be reviving. Our original guns ran well but we could hardly give them away so eventually cut the caliber from the line. It was surprising to see S&W bringing it back and proves that for some variants a degree of industry muscle will always help.
Barrels were 8 twist but you need to set up the correct bore and groove geometry as well as the land shape to get everything to work well. The barrel is quite aggressive as the 7N6 projectiles do not have much bearing surface. In examining the twist remember that the original projectile was a 54 grain weight. For commercial use the round changed to 60 grains with the correct nose profile. Much of the US ammunition on sale is now 70 grains and the profile no longer matches the original such that the chamber must be changed to sort everything out. One of the problems encountered in our early work was that the CIP print is not correct. |
