Just bought a new Colt M4 Carbine engraved lower and noticed something unusual when I got it home. The line next to the mag release fence is raised to the point you can feel it when sliding finger over it and causes the line to be visible as in the photo. The inside of the magwel appears to be perfect and nothing else seems out of the ordinary. This does not appear to be anything but a cosmetic issue so I'm gonna roll with it but thought I'd throw it out there to the group.

As far as I can see everything is square and nothing is crushed or bent. That seam is the only thing noticeable telling me it's probably a forge die issue. |

That looks like it might be a weld up of two destroyed lowers that was done before the '86 cutoff date. A number of Class 3/SOTs would buy batches of the lowers that the government had cut up. Parts would be chosen so that a viable lower could be readily welded up from two parts. John Norrell was the acknowledged master of such weldups. So much so that the BATFE had some of his lowers x-rayed as they did not believe that they were, indeed, weldups. I've never seen a weldup, but the typical weldups that I've seen in photos look similar to the posted photo. On the other hand, When your making as many M16s as Colt did in the Vietnam era, almost anything will go out the door. MHO, YMMV, etc. |
