Fellow Colt enthusiasts, has AU or anyone else have available an M5 lower 'receiver only' for sale? Has Colt let any leave the factory as lower only? I may need an M5 lower. Thanks. |

So, recently I've found FFL dealers on GunBroker who play dumb and or outright lie about complete Colt lower receivers. One claimed he was buying his from a large distributor and had nothing to do with removing an upper from a rifle and selling the lower. I didn't believe him. The only Colt lowers receiver (receiver only) I believe that are currently out there are the AU M4 Commando lowers? There were the Brownells Colt complete lowers before that. Possibly some others that AU came up with? |

Roger that! I should have been more specific about the particular lower the FFL dealer was claiming was receiver only. How about an M5? I would buy one if they were legitimately available. Eta: I'm going to call Colt to confirm, its the only way to be sure. Just because you might purchase a lower 'receiver only' and your FFL transfers this to you as a 'receiver only' does not mean that is what it is. It is my understanding, in application it does matter what the factory origin is, (what it logged-out when it left the factory to their distributors) what it will be in fact. Until you legally can decide otherwise. If the lower 'receiver only' in question left factory as a rifle, now guess what, you might want to pay the tax and file a form 1 to make an SBR. I can't imagine how a licensed dealer, that even an class 3 SOT doesn't understand this. Evidently, some random GB dealer or integrity challenged people will throw you under the bus for a dollar by not mentioning the 'lower receiver only' was a 'rifle' takeoff. Trust but verify. |

Bishop3, It's my opinion that you're way overthinking this. Do you really think the ATF is going to prosecute you because a distributor broke apart a rifle and then your dealer transferred it to you exactly how the ATF has instructed them to do so? Do you know of a single case where someone has been prosecuted in this type of scenario? The ATF regulations are contradictory. What's on the 4473 isn't. If it transfers to you as a receiver, you're good. BTW, if you're going to go through the trouble of calling Colt, get it in writing. When you're being prosecuted by the feds, witnesses tend to disappear and not remember when it's time to repeat something that said to you. If it's not in writing, then it didn't happen. |

Just an FYI....Confirmed by a knowledgeable source: Colt has never sold M5 lowers by themselves. The M5 lowers that AU sells are take-offs. The 'Commando' marked lowers and 'SCW' lowers are the only standalone lower receivers sold by Colt since the spare 6920 lowers were released years ago. |

Got a email from AU today, looks like they are now selling the 16" M5 uppers from the guns they removed these M5 lowers from. They should have noted that. Not for pistols but still nice lowers to put a 6940 or 6960 16" upper on. |
