I'm mulling over a possible purchase of a transferable, registered full auto Colt rifle and I was wondering if anyone here can chime in and tell me more about it, it's year of manufacture and it's possible value. I'm also wondering why the serial number does not have any letters, like every other Colt that I've seen. What I know so far, is that it's a former LE agency gun, surplussed off in the early 1990s to the private market. Prior to it becoming surplus, the conversion to FA took place at a government facility, which is abbreviated as "A NAD". It's a typical twenty inch A1 Sporter looking rifle, of unknown original manufacturing date. Here are the markings: Left side of the mag well: Colt circle logo, AR-15 Property of U.S. Govt. M 16A1MOD (A1MOD looks sloppy and if there was a digit after MOD, they ran out of room before the raised part of the mag well) CAL.5.56 MM. 4007xxx Right side (ejection side) of mag well: A NAD 7 82 Any info and insights would be much appreciated. |

It looks like a hand-stamped series of 2 or 3 letters followed by 3 digits. Any idea what that's all about? I'll ask the owner for some better photos tomorrow and I'll post them here. |

As mentioned, a lot of us function much better with pics. That said, it looks like you were steered in the right direction. If US Prop marked with ANAD refurb marks, that rifle definitely passed through DoD property books |

Subsequent post “A1 MOD” sounds like their way of updating it to actual A1 spec in ‘82 (according to the ANAD date). 604s are not true A1s since they didnt have forward assists from the factory The 604 model designation was just “M16” in the USAF |
