I am creating this thread to discuss the IRay Xmini MH25 thermal monocular. This is a unit that I am very excited about. There has been a gap in the industry for a compact, light-weight, helmet-mountable, 640 resolution thermal monocular that doesn't cost a fortune. Currently, the only mainstream options for helmet-mountable thermals are the FLIR Breach, Trijicon IR Patrol, and the Trijicon Skeet-IR.

As a hunter, the advantages of a compact, helmet-mountable thermal monocular cannot be overstated. The amount of objects that you are able to detect with a helmet-mounted thermal that you would otherwise miss when using just a weapon scope, or even a handheld scanner is staggering. Additionally, the ability to keep your eyes on a target at all times while moving is extremely helpful for safety, efficiency, and situational awareness.

We recently received a couple of these units for testing and were extremely surprised and impressed by the image quality and performance of these units. We will continue to test these units and provide additional information here as we learn more.

I’ll say, the capabilities are probably impressive and a good unit... but you putting it next to a Skeet makes it look like the Supervision.

IRay has actually been in the thermal sensor and core business for over a decade and have a substantial footprint in the industry outside the US. I believe the core in the mini is their Micro 2 core.

looks impressive. will any of the models have reticles for use as a clip on, or are they all strictly handheld units? I am still looking for something to fill the gap my old Q14 left, where its primarily a handheld, but can be used as a clip on in a pinch. I know there are other options, but they are all ~7k, which I just can't justify for as sparingly as I use my thermal.

When you say clip-on I assume you mean use as a weapon sight? It is definitely not a collimated pass-through device that can be mounted in front of a day optic.

As far as weapon mounting capability, it does have an adjustable reticle and can physically be mounted using existing hardware (M-Clips, Wilcox Flip-to-Side), but IRay stated that it wasn't specifically designed to withstand weapon recoil and that it would likely shut off during shooting. We will get some further clarification on this and what it will mean as far as warranty goes. Of course I will do some mag dumps with various calibers and see how it holds up.

Aside from the recoil rating, the short eye relief and slight mounting offset are issues that would need to be addressed to make it suitable for use as a weapon sight.

Well that’s a bummer. And when I said clip-on, I actually did mean clip-on in its correct usage being in front of an optic. As far as I know the SkeetIR-x isn’t collimated either and Trijicon shows it being used as a clip-on. I’d be alright adjusting the screen up/down/left/right to “zero” the screen to my say optic. But if it’s not weapons recoil rated, then I guess it’s a moot point.

The black hot 150 yard photos above from both units look like black and white photos.

very nice.

It appears to have instalert also.

I wonder how it's going to look under the hot muggy summertime conditions? Probably the same as everybody else's?

It's my understanding that larger lenses perform better in bad thermal conditions. The lens on it isn't as small as an Axion so it'll probably perform better than that but worse than a MKIII 60mm haha

Never had a thermal with palettes so I guess I have always viewed them as fluff. So to those that have thermals with color palettes do you really use them in the field or are they just an initial wow that fall into the abyss?

I would rather just see B/W and have them put whatever resources from the palettes into making it a clip-on.

I never use them, short of just showing them to people. Hand them the device and say "Here's the color your used to seeing when thermal is portrayed in film/advertisements." For practical use (Coyote hunting) they're all too confusing and make it harder to distinguish stuff. I stick with white hot.

Edit to add. I don't think color palettes and clip-on capability are a 1:1 as far as work goes. Probably stupid easy to add in the software to support color palettes. Where as matching the sensor input to screen output seems like it would involve a lot more black magic.

Yes. I use outdoor alert mode almost exclusively on my PTS233. I find it works awesome for my location especially this time of year. I use outdoor alert, black hot, & white hot in that order of preference.

I prefer black hot normally, but I really like flir boson outdoor alert which seems to be black hot with an orange glow in an animal.

Similar to that last color palette picture shown above although that seems to be a white hot base?

Hope it stays non ITAR with cross hairs.

The protected 16650 won’t output the 2500mah rated.
But the non protected bare cell will if charged to the 4.35v rating.  These are Sanyo UR16650ZTA cells ($6.25 ea) inside, Orbtronic or the keep power brands use these.
The bare cells performed better so I removed the protection pcb and strip going to +. Then re-shrink  wrapped them. Been using them for years in IR Hunter & Patrol units.

This unit with a 1x unity view and light weight will be the replacement for my patrol if they perform as stated.
The patrol helmet mounted is a heavy beast.
