In 1983-4, the small communication maintenance firm I worked for did cameras and intercom stuff at the Ed Bluestein Motorola campus. They seemed both huge and, sadly, kind of inept. Lots of chip fabrication facilities, lots of highest tech, but their A/C didn't always work in some strange places. I remember one door nobody used because it didn't want to open - maybe the foundation shifted or maybe they just built it wrong. It was an eye opener about big business, especially when I worked for a VERY small company housed in a small building directly across the street from KVET's transmitter tower, off Research Blvd...
So anyway, I can see Motorola not being happy with local machine shops - there weren't a lot of them then. But while I don't know if they went with any outside firm or bought some equipment and set it up themselves (they could have easily done that too), I see a real loss for Motorola there. And of course a real win for the AR community! Funny how things work out, eh? |

That is phenomenal. Great story.
I've been trying to buy machine shops in the oil and gas industry but have been disappointed by the margins. The aerospace industry has much better margins but after taking a look at their customer contracts…talk about getting bent. All that said, seeing your success is inspirational. :) |
