Does anybody have any information on the quality of the Midwest industries branded 223 Wylde barrel?

I just purchased a complete midwest industries ar15 upper from Brownells and now I’m having buyers remorse...the upper was on sale on brownells website and I noticed it didn’t have any specs on the barrel. Looking The midwest industries site the next tier complete upper is a little over $100 more then the complete upper I purchased. The full rifle which has the upper I purchased is $95 cheaper at 1,205 then the next tier complete rifle which is $1300. The standalone midwest industries branded barrel in the upper I purchased is $160, the standalone barrel in the next tier upper is $270. It appears the lower tier upper is cutting the costs on the barrel which is arguably the most important part. I called Midwest industries to ask him what the specs were and the guy I talk to you said he wasn’t allowed to tell me who made the barrel. He told me the specs were 1/8 twist, Chrome lined, melonite treated and he didn’t have what the barrel was made out of but he could find out. He put me on hold for 30 seconds and came back and said the barrel was 4150 steel. The barrel in the next tier is made by Criterion. This is my first AR15 build and I’m going in blind and I really don’t wanna buy crap. So if anybody has any information or guidance I would appreciate it. Also sorry for the limited explanation, I did a longer explanation but because I’m new to this forum I am limited to 2000 characters. |

We sell either chrome lined criterion barrels or melonite barrels built to our specs by a very good manufacture . Both shoot outstanding as long as you do your part and use good ammo. We don’t disclose who makes them for us but they are 100 percent American made and we stand behind them . Troy MI |

I almost bought one of those as it was a good deal. My son ended up finding something locally, but i would have had no issue buying it. Midwest makes quality stuff and they stand behind their stuff. Customer service is great and they just said above they will take care of you if any (unlikely issues). I wouldn't have buyers remorse. Shoot the upper and see how it performs. If i had to guess it is a BA, Faxon,or Roscoe barrel. They all make good barrels and i am guessing they get a second QA/QC at Midwest before they are assembled. |

You are correct that it’s one of those 3. The barrel will shoot. Might need a few rounds down it to “break it in”. If a guy were to compare roll marks he could figure it out. |

| I ordered a MI upper the other day and ended up canceling the order because of the lack of information on the specs/ barrel information. I can understand certain types of information being kept confidential but when you have customers spending their hard earned money on a product they should know exactly what they are getting and from what sources if they request that information. What’s the big secret? Being transparent is just good business sense. Extremely unprofessional is all that comes to mind after reading the above comments. |

IMHO Disclosing your manufacturer is awesome for consumer perception, but it also leaves a company vulnerable to competitive intel. I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to divulge your source for barrels, especially in this market, where everyone's searching for OEM component providers. Bottom line, if the barrel shoots, then who cares. If it doesn't shoot, then it's up to Midwest to take care of the customer, and I have enough experience with their products that I believe they'd do just that. More power to you, MI |

| I think this is the only industry I follow that has people get up in arms if a supplier doesn't disclose the oem of the parts. Midwest industries sells this, midwest industries will be warranting this. Who makes it for them is, frankly, not your business. What IS important are specs. Grade of steel, rifling twist and type, finish, gas port size, etc. If you, for some silly reason, don't trust MI to put out a good product.. buy elsewhere. |
