Creation of a REAL SPR (Page 1 of 2)

These are pics from the REAL source of SPRs, I was only invited for the weekend, these have nothing to do with me or adco. If you see a pic of an SPR in action, this is where it came from, and what it went through. Lots of little things done to test/prep the barrel, and other small parts but that’s boring........ Gotta have barrels  And upper receivers  Torque, check and retorque the barrel nut  Install the gas block and gas tube  Install the locking pins for the FF RAS    Tighten the screws on the gas block  Install the OPS INC collar  Snug up the OPS INC brake  Check headspace  Uppers ready to test fire(note lack of fancy bolt carrier)  Load the mags  Locate the targets, 12” steel plates 340yds into the woods, through the leaves.  Test fire!  Bore sight? Nope, a team scope works just fine, follow the trace and correct as necessary.  Looking at the shooting position from the target area.  After a successful test firing, the OPS thread protector is installed and they are ready to go.  |

The crush washer is test fit, and when necessary(usually necessary) material is removed from crushwasher until the brake is just "snug", then 262 holds it in place. Theres actually a long story behind that - I'll have to fill you in when you get back. BTW - this is the Cmdrs friends place. |

It must really suck, having to zero those rifles all the time. I'm sure he gets tired of it. If I didn't like my job roofing and pouring asphalt in August, I would send in an Application for Employment...  Thanks for sharing the process. Glad they're going to good use. |
loctite 262 threadlocker. pictured below sitting on the vise. once it sets up you usually have to heat the crap out of it to get the part back off. in general, use loctite "blue" if you want to get it back off sometime without too much trouble (e.g. scope mounts and the like), and loctite "red" if you *never* want it coming off by itself (trailer hitch ball is a good example). ar-jedi

A set screw and 262. The barrels dont have anything special for attaching the collar, just a step in the contour for it to mount up against to insure proper placement. |

Nitpicking and perhaps just my ignorance but I thought for proper torque one had to use the torque wrench 90deg to the barrel wrench? Any mods or thread locker under the handguardRAS nut? I've heard of some coming loose (mine actually did). I heard they were drilling and set screwing the nut in the field and that they might now be put together with thread locker. He's checking headspace - does that mean he doesn't use fitted bolts? Thanks for the pics, it's nice to see where my SPR came from.

Sorry, those are somewhat posed pictures, and that may be after the nut was torqued..
The Mod 0s had to have set screws attached for another reason(not my place to post why, sorry). If there were reports of them coming lose in the field it would be well known. (The real ones have a bit of a mystery substance on the threads.) Also at the request of the buyer, sometimes they werent assembled with loctite. - I'm sure you can understand an AR owner wanting to be able to take his upper apart and swap something down the road.. If you bought a real one from someone else - yours may have been taken apart and reassembled before it was shipped it you. There was someone who got real uppers, took them apart and reverse engineered them to get all the specs to start selling them. 
"Fitted bolt" is marketing to make something sound more than it is. There is no such thing. If you purchase 10 barrels from a White Oak, or Compass lake, you will get 10 barrels and a bag with 10 bolts. The barrel extensions are set to a minimum headspace, and the bolts are checked, but thats it. Same goes for the real barrel if you have one - there was never a bolt fit to that specific barrel/extension. |
