Hey there PA, Last year, I purchased a 5x Microprism (ACSS Aurora) for use on a 10/22 TD. The Microprisms are perfect for pack rifle use due to their low weight and high durability. The problem is, since day 1, I haven't been able to get a consistent focus on reticle/sight picture at 25 yards and under. This is a big problem on a .22, where a lot of shots happen within 75 feet. It really hit me last week when doing a squirrel hunt, my first non-paper shooting with the optic; I couldn't take some ethical shots due to the blur. I contacted CS about the issue, and at first they offered to inspect the optic for me. However, after some discussion, they informed me that because the parallax is set at 100 yards, blurriness at <25 yards is expected and a warranty inspection wouldn't be needed. For the record, I don't think CS did anything wrong. I've read other reports of short-range blurriness with the 5x Microprism here on ARF (and even posted about it in the past), so it sounds like they're being honest with me. What bothers me is that this wasn't disclosed on the optic page. In fact, the opposite is described, and that description is part of what led me to my purchase. Here's a quote from the product page, emphasis mine: Weighing only 8.5oz with a 3.31" overall length, the SLx 5x MicroPrism is comparable to many red dot sights, though its crystal-clear glass and 5x magnification offer improved precision at even longer distance than the 3x variant. Even in close-quarters, the optic’s wide field-of-view and forgiving eye relief make it easy to snap on target. Because the SLx 5x MicroPrism uses an etched reticle with adjustable diopter, the user will always have a clear, crisp reticle image, even if they have severe astigmatism. Overall, I'm feeling a bit confused and pretty disappointed with the purchase. I don't have this issue with other optics that have 100-yard parallaxes, and it seems like the product description describes something that is not true about the optic in the end. Does PA offer the opportunity to exchange optics in situations like this (for a 1x or 3x Microprism, for example)? Note that I'm a long-time PA buyer under various accounts, and plan to be in the future even if this doesn't have a resolution. I know you guys are good people and don't question your business ethics. I'm just feeling let down and not sure what to do. |

Geometric optics is a thing. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di, nothing you can do to change the math for a fixed parallax. As the image distance decreases, the image distance must increase, and too close gets you an image distance that cannot be rightly resolved. This is why scopes with adjustable parallax exist. No fault of PA. you need to buy a rimfire specific scope or at least one with adjustable parallax. |
Don't be so open-minded that your brains fall out.

While they can't control physics, they can control their product marketing. |
