I started a thread in this forum regarding this exact topic based on information that I received first-hand from someone at Colt who is in a position to know these things, not some CS person that just answers questions with whatever comes to minds. This is what I wrote in the other thread:
"Hello all, I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who may be looking to buy a Colt M4 6920 lower receiver. I spoke with a reliable Colt representative (not just a standard CS phone answerer who may or may not know what they are talking about) a few days ago regarding the availability of M4 6920 lower receivers sold separately. I was told by this person that the only place they are selling these to going forward is Brownell's, just like Brownell's recently had before they sold out. Brownell's will be receiving their final shipment of these lowers in late June/early July. Because of decisions made by Colt's legal department, they will no longer be selling any lowers separately. You will only be able to get them on complete rifles or as take-offs from someone who split a rifle up. So if you want to get your hands on a lower without the hassle of having to split a rifle, sell the upper you don't want, etc., you are going to want to get on the notification email from Brownell's when these get back in stock. I have waited many times in buying one hoping for lower prices, but I can only see the prices going up once the inventory is gone and people buy multiple units to resell. I just picked one up on the EE for a good/fair price, but with the inventory and availability about to dry up, I'm sure the market price will adjust accordingly." Now maybe this person was lying to me, mistaken, or maybe Colt has changed their mind regarding selling lowers separately. I have no reason to make this information up, am not affiliated with any company whatsoever, and was just passing this information so that people who may have been on the fence about buying the Colt lower they want or waiting for another big price cut wouldn't miss out on the opportunity to buy one. There's a lot of information out there going both directions, but all I can say is, again, I received this information first-hand from someone at Colt that would be in the position to know these types of things. |

I have a feeling that this deal is done, and the only lowers we are going to see anytime soon are the take-aparts from Mexico or Pistons or AR15 marked. I have heard a few things that also support that, but hey... I am not the Oracle (Greek mythology, not the database), and jsut as I think I have heard the most authoritative information, I get surprised, especially from name-brand firearms companies. Colt, KAC, LaRue, Geissele, Surfire, you name it. Things that were "take it to the bank" one week, are 360 degrees the next.

I'm kind of annoyed with Brownells and constantly changing the price on these lowers. I've heard of people getting them for under $250 but I paid $350 for mine about 2 weeks ago. I checked the website on Saturday (2 days ago) and they were $279.
Mine is very nice, the rollmark is perfect and the trigger is amazingly nice smooth and crisp for a mil-spec FCG. I was planning on buying a Geisselle S3G for it but I may just run it as is for awhile and see if it breaks in even smoother. I got one of the CR serial numbers, but it really doesnt matter to me one way or another. I bought one of the new SBA3 adjustable pistol braces for my lower and ordered a Colt Commando 6933 upper for it yesterday. I'll run mine as a pistol while I Form 1 the lower. The only changes I'll probably make are a MOE triggerguard, MOE K2 grip and a MBUS Pro rear sight. The Commando has always been a grail to me so once I found out I could buy a Colt lower and make it a "pistol" while I wait for the stamp, that's all it took to push me over the edge. Now it's time to save for a 901 16S Cory |

I've been into purchasing gear seriously now for only 10 years, which is not long compared to some of the ole' timers here, but the longer I've been at it, the more patient I've become, and now, I just don't buy anything until it's at a price that's at least 10-15% off, unless it's just an item that will never go on sale. Set the price that is a great deal for yourself and don't settle until it goes on sale for that much. |

I'd prefer LEs but the reality is I don't think now that it matters in the long run.
For non-Colt event (original Colt parts are expensive) - I have found Noreen billets U/L very nice in fit, finish and quality, and well priced (if you accept no FA). Yet, I still like the notion of a "Colt" and would buy a couple if the price drops low enough. Edit: Just checked - $399.99 for M4 lower and out of stock. |
