| living in idaho i hear a lot of people tell me to go check out oregon coast. so we are planning a family vacation late august. what are the must see and must do things there? ideal areas to stay? great seafood places to eat? any advice is welcome. thanks |

The beach is the only thing keeping me from moving out of this leftist shit hole. I love the coast. But depot bay is nice.......Florence is nice. Everything is pretty touristy. last year I was in Yachats and went to a restaurant that was way above my pay grade.....the way the place was run to the quality of the food was unbelievable for a lowly blue collar worker I felt out of place. https://www.onarestaurant.com/ |

I'm on the other side of the fence. I've never been to the coast when it wasn't cold, windy, and things that rust in milliseconds due to the salt air. I refuse to take one of my vehicles to the coast. IMHO, the coast has no redeeming qualities. Have yet to find a decent gun shop or anything that wasn't just a tourist trap. I generally spend my time on the coast running the RC crawler on the rocks. Wife loves the coast. I hate it. Spent a few days near Yachats a couple months back. Best food I found was in Newport. I don't eat seafood. The smell of it makes me sick to my stomach. It all just depends on what you want out of it. |

Storms are fun to watch come in. If you have things you want to do or enjoy doing I may be able to help point you in a direction. A little of that salt air can haunt your steel items for ages. |

In Newport the Oregon Coast Aquarium is pretty good if you are into that sort of thing. I think Newport south is more visually appealing than north, however far more folks go to the north coast. North of Newport you have the Tillamook Cheese factory, which is a giant tourist trap, The entire city of Seaside which is where the majority of Portland goes to the coast via hwy 26, Then Astoria which has a great Maritime Museum. Also, Fort Stevens out in Warrenton and Fort Clatsop (Lewis & Clark Expedition) between the two. There is much more along the coast of course those are just a few off the top of my head. Mabey when you have narrowed down a section that you are visiting, we can be more specific with ideas. 363 miles of coast is a lot to cover. |

Newport aquarium is worth a visit. Loads of good seafood on the coast. If there is a line it should be good. We spend a lot of time @ Bandon. Nothing to do there but eat, drink, fish and relax. I have camped and fished all over as you go south from there. Stunning views and good seafood. I am posting this from Panther Flat campground on the smith river. Stunning river! It has been in the low 100’s here but 20 miles away the coast is 70. We spend yesterday on the coast hiking the redwoods. If you can hit the redwoods do it. It’s hard to describe how beautiful, and freeking big, those trees are. |

We (my wife and I) went to it plenty of times during the 13 years we lived together in the NW. Never had any rust issues on any of the 4 vehicles we took there over the years. None of her family members had any rust on vehicles from the hundreds of trips there over the past 70 years. Must have something to do with the Oregon rains washing it off constantly? |

Hell, I got more rust on my truck from 18 months in Mississippi than 38+ years in Oregon. Mostly high desert. I've seen sand hold moisture in. That's why my RC cars have rust, Oregon coast. Most of them haven't even seen coastal sand! |
| If your starting around Newport, South Beach Grocery and Seafood has the hands down best fish and chips on the coast. Luna Sea in Seal Rock is great, I dont care for Ona in yachats. Drift Inn in Yachats is fantastic. Beware summer beach attire is usually hoodies etc. August has been nothing but fog so far. Whenever the Valley gets 80 or above the fog rolls in, but its patchy in different spots. You can rent a boat and crab rings in Waldport and go clamming in Alsea Bay. August is when most of the crabs molt into new shells though. Lincoln city and northern newport are completely run over by tourists. Seal Rock and south are your best options. Just have fun. |
| I grew up in Roseburg, Oregon and am now in Idaho and the coast is one of the few things I miss about that state. I will echo what others have said about the northern coast being a tourist trap. I would say from Florence to Bandon is where you are going to get the best coast experience. Our favorite place was around Winchester bay and we would just go down to the docks and buy whateever was fresh coming into the cannery there in town. Winchester Bay is a little tough just because of all the dune riders in the area. If you go way far south on the coast one of my favorite areas was Port Orford and Brookings. |
