| My kid just accepted a sales job in NC. He's 22 and a recent college grad. Born and raised in semi rural WI. His territory will be Raleigh - Durham and surrounding areas (pretty much half of the state will be his). Told him I'd ask here for thoughts on best areas. Price is somewhat a factor. Looking to stay at around $1,000/month for rent. If the job works out he plans to buy something with in a year. Not looking for downtown living, but he's young so not a sleepy little town either. He's a scratch golfer so having a reasonably decent golf course close by is a plus. He says he spent the last 4 years living with room mates so he'd like a place of his own. If you have any leads on rentals or areas that might be appropriate shoot them my way. |

$1K a month on rent? Good luck on that one no matter where you are. No offense you’re talking hood/shithole for that in today’s market. ETA: Out of curiosity, what’s his salary look like? Once you get out of the Raleigh area it can get pretty rural pretty quick. But you say he doesn’t want that, I understand that especially at his age. But that might be the only option if he is wanting to keep his monthly rent at that range. The other thing with that area is the traffic. It sucks. Just keep that in mind. Wherever he does end up, put boots on the ground first. Do not enter into any lease agreement without first looking at it and the area it’s in. |

Doing some basic searches on Google still shows your son is being light in his budget of $1300. More like $1500 to $1600 a month is more realistic. Of course these rates aren’t tied to any particular area or neighborhood, so that could be more like the hood and not a nicer/safer area. There can also be some hidden fees in those rates so be aware of those as well. |

Which "half" of the state will be his territory? East of RDU or west? He might find cheaper apartments living on the outskirts of RDU than trying to be right in the middle of it. Also avoiding traffic would depend on which "half" he is to cover with his job. |
There's nothing wrong with a little personal baggage, it's owning the whole luggage store that's the problem.

$1300 would get him an apt. in Fuquay Varina, just south of Ral. Fuquay is an ok town, has most of the big chain stores and a good number of local places, has breweries, parks, a few thing young folks would like, traffic sucks because roads did not keep up with growth. It's 15-30 min to Ral and 30-45 to RTP depending on what side of town, time of day... |

Look for apartments in Raleigh for that price or in the RTP region between Raleigh and Durham. There are tons of neighborhoods with nice apartments at or under 1300. I would recommend a little closer in to the west or north sides of Raleigh to be near young people and nicer areas. Being near the highway would help for work travel. There are public golf courses in the suburbs and rural areas in all directions, but you'll need to drive for a bit. |
| Hopefully he can find something that works for him. Here in the western end of the state there are 30 year old single wide trailers renting for over $1000 per month. One of my kids is in Garner, everything is expensive. |
