If the shooting was on the south side of the road, in Franklin County, they'd be sent home with milk and cookies. -- WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WSYX) — A Fourth of July celebration in Westerville ended with a shooting in a parking area after the city’s fireworks show, sending one person to the hospital in critical condition and leading to the arrests of two teenage suspects. The Westerville Division of Police said the shooting happened around 10:50 p.m. in the area of 428 County Line Road, where people had been parking for the event. Westerville Chief of Police Holly Murchland said the celebration itself went as planned, but as people were leaving, police received a call of shots fired. "Officers were already on site for the event and responded immediately," Murchland said. “They were there within less than five minutes,” she said. Police located the victim, rendered aid and also located both suspects, 18-year-old Elvis Oppong and 19-year-old Derrick Oppong. Police said one victim, a man in his late 30s, was transported to the hospital for treatment and was listed in critical condition. He was shot approximately eight times, but he is listed critical but stable. Murchland said the shooting stemmed from a dispute in the parking lot. “When you have thousands of people leaving an event, people need to have patience,” Murchland said. “It takes a while to actually be able to get clear all of those crowds out and clear all those vehicles out safely.” Both weapons were recovered at the scene. Multiple agencies responded to assist, including the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Genoa Township Police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Division of Police. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community. Murchland credited witnesses for helping officers quickly identify and detain the suspects. "We had good witnesses,” she said. “Our citizens are proactive. They’re very supportive of law enforcement and what we do. If they see something, they don’t hesitate to call us.” -- Westerville police chief Holly Murchland says, "tempers got the best of them".
