I was born in IL. Great Lakes to be exact. My father was in the navy and attending guided missile school. That was 1980 so it’s been a while. My Dad and I had a goal. To go to every NFL stadium. We visited quite a few before he succumbed to cancer. My brother and I are keeping the tradition alive and Chicago is on our list this year as Soldier Field is not only one of the most iconic football stadiums in NFL history, it’s slated to be scrapped. And being named Soldier Field is badass. We will be there for two nights so I need some recommendations. Steak house, Chicago pizza spot, and a cool museum. Any other recommendations are welcome. | Lot of good museums: science & industry, Field museum, Shedd aquarium. Lincoln Park or Brookfield Zoos. For food, there's an Ethiopian place near Loyola on the lake shore. Can't recall the name. Chicago style pizza kinda sucks, but if you're looking for the experience, the chains like Aurelio's or Malnotti's are probably as good as any. Best steak I've had in the city is probably at the Fogo de Chao. If you want some authentic Chicago grub, try Harold's chicken, some mom and pop Polish place, etc. |

Soldier's Field is Soldier's Field. Guaranteed Rate is White Sox Park. GRF / WSP is a different stadium several miles further south. The White Sox wont be playing in October. There is no reason to go there. Outsiders are not particularly welcome on the South Side. The true Soldier's Field is no more. Today's stadium is the old Soldier's Field exterior with a modern stadium dropped inside it. It doesn't quite work. That is why the Bears want a new stadium. Where is OP planning on staying? If OP stays in the South Loop, OP will be in a mile or two walking distance of everything he seeks. Get your hotel room NOW! There are also Divy ride share type bikes and scooters if you want to go that route. Uber / Lyft might be a pain post game. Plan on doing some walking. If you take the path south from South Michigan Avenue to Soldier's Field, you walk by the Museum Campus; Field Museum, Shed Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. Personally I prefer the Field Museum of the three. It is also the closest. If you go a few blocks north on Michigan Avenue, you also have the Art Institute. All are good. Museum of Science and Industry is a few miles further south. Don't walk there. If you Uber or taxi there, don't explore the parks or neighborhood around it. Your getting in the hood. There are people who specifically pray on tourists who wander from MSI. Personally I would skip it all together. Did I mention outsiders aren't welcome on the South side? Chicago Firehouse Restaurant on Michigan Avenue is a good place for a steak. It is in an old firehouse, which is cool. There is a Lou Malnatis on State Street in Printer's Row. Lou's is what you think of when you think of Chicago stuffed pizza. Herald's kitchen is on Wabash behind the Michigan Ave. Hilton, one block north of Buddy Guy's Legends. IMO Herald's is kind of ghetto. The Chinese place next to it is great though. Devil Dogs is on State, a block from Lou Malnati's if you want a Chicago style hot dog. The hot dog stand on Michigan and Jackson is also good if you go to the Art Institute. Watch for pick pockets. Think of Roosevelt and Wabash as demarcation lines. The further south or west you go from that point, the worse things become. Avoid the CTA station there. If you must use the El, bypass it. Use a station further north in the Loop. The South Loop is fairly safe by Chicago standards. That is particularly true on game day weekends due to the amount of people. Watch for pick pockets. If you look around and think, "Where did everybody go?", turn around and go the way you came. You took a wrong turn. |
