With all the news flying around lately about the Army wanting to close museums.....what's the current status of the Artillery Museum? I remember seeing a Facebook post from them months ago that they were closing or cutting their hours....are they open to the general public currently? I can't even seem to find their Facebook page anymore. I'm interested because they're the closest place to me (that I know of) that has an M3 Howitzer on display. This is a somewhat rare model, a short-barreled 105mm that was designed for the airborne. It was also used by infantry regimental cannon companies in WWII, where my Grandpa was a crewman on one in Europe. I'd really love to see one in person someday. For those who have been...how big is the museum? Is it worth a 6-7 hour drive from Texas? (I suppose with the connection to my Grandpa, I'd consider it worth almost any effort, but opinions are appreciated.) If it's not open to the public and you have to be active military to visit......anyone going there anytime soon or stationed in the area who could take pictures of the M3 for me? |

The Field Artillery museum is open Tuesday-Friday 0900-1700. The Air Defense Artillery Hall Of Heroes is a training support facility and is generally not open to the public, but you can schedule a visit if they have time available. https://sill-www.army.mil/famuseum/ https://sill-www.army.mil/adatsf/ I think it is a very good museum and would be worth the trip. @ArmyADub have you ahd a chance to check it out yet? @CAR-AR-M16 Appreciate it - that will come in handy if I'm ever able to get up there. The museum in Saint Jo is already on my list as well.....shame all of their stuff is deactivated/demilled (IIRC), but it will still be cool to see. |

Hey man sorry for the late reply. The Arrillery museum is indeed open, and it’s pretty rad. Way better than I remember is being as a young LT. Best bet is to call the museum and verify their hours. They’ve made cuts, as has the whole Army recently. Do this a few days before your planned visit and you’ll be good to go. You can put in a window of several days if you intended to make a long weekend out of it. I’d also strongly advise seeing the “Fort Sill museum and national landmark”. It’s walking distance from the Arty museum, right up in my neighborhood on Old Post Quadrangle. They just opened a new Native American wing. |
