I travel to Jackson for work about 3-4 times a year and I almost always stay in the Fondren District near the UMC campus. Never had any trouble or issues in the area. Typically walk from room to several of the restaurants around area. Was told recently that I was stupid and that area is “really sketchy” according to a couple of locals. Said it was pretty dangerous in that area. I’ve only ever seen some hipster “kids” hanging around that little bowling alley, but never felt unsafe. It was suggested I start staying in the Flowood area. Thoughts? Am I really stupid for staying in that area? No, I can’t skip out and yes I have to go to work there. |

Stay in Madison County (Ridgeland, Madison) or Rankin County (Flowood, Brandon, Pearl). I live south of Jackson and work north of jackson. Drive through it every day. Haven't set foot in it in years. Nothing is exaggerated. It's a shithole. |

| I try to stay out of Jackson if at all possible. I would give Flowood or Madison a shot. I live in Rankin County and work in Flowood. Plenty of spots to get supper, walk around Dogwood mall, etc in Flowood. Safe travels. |

| I lived in fondren my first year of law school. What a shithole of a place. The year after I moved out of fondren, my roommates house was robbed. Total shithole. It’s a liberals wet dream because of “charm” and some other nonsense, but I wouldn’t stay there ever again. |

If anything, the danger in Jackson is under-exaggerated. I don't step foot in the city unless I have no choice and when I do I'm armed to the teeth and my head is on a swivel. Fondren looks kind of nice and trendy and it's not the worst part of Jackson but it's not the safest either and there is still a lot of crime.....including violent crime..... there. There really isn't anywhere in the city that's safe. Your best bet is to stay in Flowood out on Lakeland Drive. Everything you need is out there, it's safe and an easy straight-shot drive in to Fondren/UMMC if your workplace is in that area. Plus the cops in Rankin County and Flowood have a certain reputation amongst many of the Jackson criminals that keeps the riffraff out to some degree. |
