We are thinking about moving to Spearfish in the next few years, can any of you tell me everything I need to know about the area. We are very 2A friendly if that helps Cost of living? Employment opps? Things to do for adults without kids? Local eateries and bars? Weather? Does the city maintain the backroads as well as main roads? Housing? Decent nice houses for sale preferably away from subdivisions? |

Was in spearfish no less than 2hr ago for a day out with the wife. Not a spearfish residentbut will give my 2 cents Spearfish has a college (BHSU) so it is fairly "hip" with plenty of young people by area standards. Its also an acceptable jaunt into rapid where there is even more to do. Weather wise its the tip of the black hills so it gets its good amount of snow and cold weather, will be quite a shift from AZ. Some of the heaviest snow in the western side of SD. In march of this year it dumped ~12" in 2 days on spearfish. Snow clearance wise the city is going to be pretty good but backroads are a crapshoot. If you are going into the mountains up there its going to be uncleared for the most part. You need a subaru crosstrek or taller basically to ensure mobility on all but the worst days. But even then expect a single digit number of days where you probably would be better off just staying home. Food wise the farmhouse is my favorite but nonnas and barbacoa's are fantastic as well. Employment depends on what exactly you're doing but rapid might be a better play if youre looking for more generalist employment opportunities Housing, just avoid the hideaway hills  . Housing is a mix of older homes and newer builds, subdivisions do exist but its nothing like the south west. Much smaller scale as a whole. |

Trades are desperately needed. Well-paying "middleman" activities may be very difficult to break into from out of state. Healthcare has plenty of openings.[/color] Things to do for adults without kids? Plenty. There are nearly unlimited outdoor activities, bars & restaurants. But remember, this is a relatively isolated place. Many retirees. Local eateries and bars? Buffalo Jump in Beulah, Berlin, Nonna's, Redwater, Spearfish Brewing, Crow Peak Brewing, Sawyer Brewing. Plenty of eclectic coffee shops. Weather? Does the city maintain the backroads as well as the main roads? The weather is cooler in the Northern Hills, with more precipitation than near Rapid City. City roads are well-plowed and maintained. I-90 is kept open unless there are blizzard conditions. Nighttime plowing is more situation-dependent. County roads are good and well maintained, but it will take longer to clear all of them—generally within a day of a storm. Housing? Decent, nice houses for sale, preferably away from subdivisions? |

Cost of living- normal except for housing which is really high. Employment- highly dependent on your career. But generally you will make much much less here then elsewhere regardless of trade. Eats- very good actually but it's touristy so places are often quite busy. Weather- probably 2nd only to lead/deadwood for snow. It gets snowy and icy a lot. You have to learn to drive in it. Spearfish also tends to get hit with severe storms in summer more too. Housing- available but hiiiiigggghhhh priced for what you're sound like you want. Plan 650-750k if you don't want to live in town or a development. Spearfish is to the black hills what Boulder is to Colorado. Not as bad but definitely a lot more hippy than the rest of the hills. It's a nice place but has its drawbacks. |
