A shotgun is awful for self defense. Massive recoil, tough follow up shots, tiny capacity, too many pellets to account for and make safe shots, over penetration of walls due to multiple pellets etc. Handguns are also not great. Very hard to shoot accurately (unless you train a ton), bad terminal effects, easy to take away. Semi auto rifles are the best possible option. Very little recoil, easy to aim, easy to hold and manipulate, good capacity. Magazine limits - in a world of easily 3d printed mags, what's the point of limiting law abiding people? When criminals will ignore it. Plus, law abiding people should be able to take advantage of normal capacity mags. Just because some people use mags and AWs wrongly, doesn't mean you can punish everyone and ban them for all. Our first lawsuits against UNsafe wrongly argued that "AWs" weren't really any more dangerous or effective than other guns...so why ban them? The judges didn't buy that. They said "well if other guns are just as good, I'm fine with politicians taking a crack at banning them" Yes a semi auto rifle is very effective. That's why we need them. |
