I've bought mine through Silencer Shop. It was pretty painless. But I used an FFL a couple hours west of Brainerd. I did a quick look on the Silencer Shop website. It looks like Boone's Fine Gun shop in Isle is the closest. It shows they have a kiosk where you can get your fingerprints digitized. Alexandria has two, Alex Pro Firearms and Viking Pawn. A little further drive though. A friend has a couple from Silencer Central. Once you're set up with them they ship to your door. They show up at some of the local gun shows. |

I still get the shaft from the ATF or FBI when my last one was still around 100 days. If you have an idea on what you want the process isn't too bad. The short and sweet is find a can to buy, buy it, fill out the form 4, certify form 4, wait, fill out stupid 4473 even though you just got roto-rootered by the feds, take it home and enjoy.  Potential differences or hiccups in the process: The need for fingerprints (card or digital) and a passport type photo (phone selfie w/ certain restrictions ok) If you want the can in a trust: was great in old rules, but now only certain trust setups are convenient (now all responsible persons need picture and fingerprints), trusts can potentially slow down process (I haven't sent a boilerplate trust in under these supposed new process adjustments recently). Silencer Shop, Capitol Armory (including various manufacturers that use them), or your local shop all do the form 4 and certifying process a smidge different, end result should be the same What else are you wondering about @eagle308us ? |

Current wait times are generally 2 weeks or less for individual; last form 4 I had e-filed for a can was Aug 9 and was approved Aug 15 - 6 calendar days. Individual (not trust) form 4 - so I had my prints and photos taken at my FFL, they e-filed the works - I already had an ATF E-Forms account, which accelerated things quite a bit - and took care of it from there. Last form 1 I e-filed for an SBR was Aug 20, was approved Aug 23 - 3 calendar days. I used the photo and prints from the e-filed can a couple weeks before that, filed it at home, and had the approval in my email 3 days later. Ez-pz. Probably going to be filing another one (or two) in the coming weeks. If you find a can dealer up there and they participate in ATF E-filing, do yourself a favor and sign up for an ATF E-Forms account first - that way when you buy future cans you won't have to juggle multiple ATF accounts and it generally just makes life easier. You can buy through Silencer Shop or really any retailer; so long as your local FFL can do e-filing and take prints and photos, on your end it should be painless and fast. I'd suggest buying from a retailer that has your local FFL on file though just to make life easy. In general - it's not difficult or anything - the only appreciable difference on your end is that they need to print and photograph you. The form is almost identical to a 4473; format's different but the questions are the same (are you a criminal, did you renounce your citizenship, are you a heroin addict, etc). And, of course, the wait for the background check to complete I'd highly suggest visiting the dealer first and a) making sure they e-file and b) making sure they're not assholes. If they don't e-file you'll be in for a 6+ month wait as the paper form clears...you don't want that if you can avoid it. If they can't take your electronic prints there, move on - it sucks to say but that's a prerequisite for this. Funny paperwork thing - yes, you do need to file another 4473 to transfer the can from the dealer to you, after the form 4 clears. BUT, you don't need to have a permit to purchase to transfer it. It's not a firearm, so it's exempt from needing a carry permit or permit to purchase
