| Hey guys, can't believe I havent even heard anything but local news coverage on this. Short story is we've gotten relentless rain this spring and the rivers and creeks were already out of their banks. Friday night we got nailed again, as well as to the west and north of us got 6-7" of rain. Anyway, few ways in and out of town, boats and rescue crews floating in the middle of main street. I have yet to get south of the bridge on Grand ave that seperates the town, or to get west of the river due to high water and crumbling roads. Spent time yesterday and today trying to get water out of friends and families basements. My parents laminate floor is floating in bubbled bulges, they had 6" or so in their basement. Will try to post pics, but Im new and not a tech guy. |

I was up Sunday to Spirit Lake to drop a new sump pump for my folks and helped clear water in the basement for a couple hours. Drive back to south of Sioux City was a bit rough lots of closures along low lying areas. Since then has been pretty silly. Correctionville, oto, anthon, smithland and rodney all had varying levels of flooding. Smithlands flood covered a good bit of ground and smashed the dikes killed power for me all day yesterday. The fields along the little sioux are all one big pond now with the water flowing through pretty fast. Yesterday I was down through crescent and council bluffs but the water didn't look bad yet they closed off interstate or kept planning to throughout the day glad I got down and back out before it did. I spoke with other folks up north more and many of the towns are under water. Gonna be a long clean up. |

I did hear that last Sunday (I think, days ran together in the last week) a levee or dam in Windom, MN let loose that was on the west fork Des Moines river. Not sure what that will mean for areas over there, but havent heard of Emmetsburg getting it too bad and it runs right on their western edge. There are entire neighborhoods of Spencer that look like a warzone. City engineers and fire dept are going around and red tagging alot of homes. I'm sure entire neighborhoods will be bulldozed, reminds me of Cedar Rapids after 2008. FEMA is here, along with tons of crews from all over the country. The cleanup effort is massive but this town will never be the same. I expect alot of people will be financially devastated from this, as people were already stretched to the limit. Its sounding like insurance isnt going to cover very many people, and the flooding was so widespread it reached places people never would have even considered buying flood insurance. Alot of homeless people. For those who know the area, there was a little home on hwy 18 about a mile east of the Little Sioux river called Hawk Valley Farms. They would grow pumpkins and in the fall lots of folks took their kids out to pick out their pumpkins, feed the chickens and turkeys bread and such. At 5:15 am last saturday, the river took the entire house. Just gone. Hwy 18 has been completely closed since, and I suspect the bridge is either gone or very damaged. |

I just ran the highways through both towns and came into Forest City from the West on the county blacktop and everything was open. I'm sure there are probably some gravel roads somewhere that might be closed due to flooding but I never came across any signs stating that. |
