MS state law forbids speed camera ticketing, however Hattiesburg and a couple of other cities have partnered with a 3rd party vendor to send out speed camera tickets. A car registered to me got photographed speeding (10 over) but the ticket was sent to the person to whom the car is registered NOT the driver. I know this because I wasn't in the state at the time. In TN if you get a camera ticket you can just throw it out and nothing comes of it at all. Has anyone got any experience with these tickets in Hattiesburg recently? In before DoN't SpEeD. |

All I know is that several towns had contracted with some company to do that. Then, as you say, the state banned them. I'm adamantly opposed to it and anxious to hear how yours turns out. The citation amounts are also notably high, with one example in Hattiesburg being $230 for a school zone speeding violation, where the city retains $75, the technology company $130, and the state $25. The practice has led to a class-action lawsuit in Hattiesburg and prompted legislative action to close the perceived loophole. In response, State Senator Joey Fillingane (R-Sumrall) introduced SB 2201 to amend the law and explicitly prohibit the manual operation of automated recording equipment by officers. I don't think we have speed cameras up here (in TN), just the red light cameras. IIRC Millington tried putting a squad car with a speed camera in it on the side of the road and the state AG slammed their pecker in the door over it. I'd call the state AG's office and the county attorney's office to see what the actual validity of the ticket is first. |
