My oldest is turning 10. The wife unit and I like to do experiences for the kids instead of birthday parties. He’s asked to visit Shed Aquarium and the Field Museum for his birthday which seems pretty straightforward. We’d like to make a weekend of it and are looking for recommendations on places to stay. It seems every hotel in that area is $600-1,000 a night. While yes, we can afford it - the price seems a bit steep for a birthday experience. Any hotel recommendations at a more reasonable rate would be appreciated. Thanks! |

You can get anything you want in Chicago, ya just gotta pay. Your trade off is cost vs convenience vs safety. If you stay close and expensive, it will cost more and be safe as long as you take a (short) Uber. If you stay close and cheap, it will be less safe regardless of your transit (Uber vs walking) choice. If you stay farther away (automatically cheaper), you will spend more time and money in transit regardless of Uber vs driving. And parking can be $75 for 8+ hours at either venue. If you can afford it, stay close in a safe lodging and Uber (or Lyft) - you will not regret the enjoyable time spent with loved ones. |

I like the Science and Industry better than Field, but both are cool. Shedd is neat as well. All are fairly close to each other. You can always take the Metra in from the burbs as well. I see you are in Michigan, make sure you bring Ben Johnson with you...unless Thomas Brown works out with us. |

I’d prefer somewhere warm but we let him pick. It’s still relatively south of our AO so I’ve at least got that going for me. |
