Carpooling w/ roomate and heard the attacks on Howard Stern. When I got to work I could see smoke rising and jets patrolling above the pentagon from my 6th floor office in Oakton. Lived in Clarke county at the time and the sheriff shut down the road on/off the mountain because DC VIPS were sheltering there a few days. Saw a lot of motorcades w/ bike escorts coming and going. We had to show ID to get to our house for a while. |

I was at my desk in the manufacturing company as a Unix administrator & database programmer. A buddy of mine (past I.T. careers) called me and asked if my company had a TV. I said there was one in the company cafeteria. He said to go turn it on, a plane hit the World Trade Center. I saved and closed out the program I was in and rushed to the cafeteria. Other employees were already there watching. It was at that exact moment when, live on TV, I saw the 2nd plane hit. My heart sunk and I said to myself, here we go... Here we go... WWIII. The next day I shocked my company by informing them that I drafted up a professional military request letter to USCG HQ in Washington DC, asking them to rescind my retirement and bring me back on active duty. Anywhere, anyplace, I want to help out. Sadly, 2 weeks later, I got a reply letter, thanking me for stepping up, but they don't need Yeoman. They were looking for Gunner's Mates and Port Securitymen. ....hey, I tried. |

I lived in Alexandria and worked in Crystal City for four years but left in 2000 for active duty in the Army. I was stationed in Colorado, so with the time zone difference, the attacks happened during physical training (PT) that morning. As soon as I found out, I called friends at my old office in Crystal City to see if they were all ok. I was never able to get through because of how the phone lines were slammed. I can still remember hearing the "All circuits are busy" message each time I called. An old family friend was traveling to Los Angeles for work that morning and considered taking AA flight 77, the one that hit the Pentagon. He ultimately decided to take a later flight because it was $200 cheaper, and he figured he would save the company some money. That decision saved his life. |
