I'm in the aircraft maintenance field and I have the possibility of moving out to work maintenance at honolulu for two years minimum. I'm not sure if I would want to stay forever, but that's mainly because I haven't moved out of my home state before. I know most of my fun toys would have to stay on the mainland and I've been to oahu more than a handful of times as a tourist to know that things are really expensive. From a cursory look at housing, I believe we would be renting. My wife and I have a five year old with the possibility of another one on the way. My family and i feel that the move here even just for a few years would be a positive experience. In our minds, that's something we would be interested in doing. I'm mainly looking at this post as a way to ask if anyone knows living in Hawaii has any hints or tips or tricks or things, they wish they would have known that they feel I should know? |

Work the OT if you can. You are going to need it. Rent is high, get a Costco card, and learn the area and people. Just remember that the firearms laws in the state are screwy and running in third worst gun laws in the country. But that's my opinion. |

Sure, it's pricy. It's also great weather year-round and a unique cultural experience. The gun laws have their quirks, but it's not as restrictive as you might guess. No NFA items or "assault pistols" (eg. ARs, AKs, Uzis, MP5s). Pistols are limited to 10rds but long guns are whatever you want. Registration is a thing, in case that bothers you. |
