My kid will be doing an REU (Research Experience for Undergrads) at Oregon State University in Corvallis this summer. Is there anything in general we should know about the area that might be helpful? Off the top of my head, we would be curious about: - places to see - places to avoid - grocery store(s) - restaurant(s) - beaches Of course, I'm mostly talking about places that are nearby. None of us have been in that part of the country before. The wife and I might fly out there, too, for a visit after our kid has settled in. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance! |

| I grew up in Corvallis (1975-1993). Never thought it was a particularly interesting place, but I would appreciate what it has to offer as a family friendly place now that I'm an old fogie. I digress......What do you define as "nearby"? Drive to the Oregon coast (Newport) is an hour away, there is a Saturday/Farmer's Market, but I don't know about restaurants since I've barely been back since I graduated from OSU. The campus, IMO, is beautiful and worth a walk through. |

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Since my kid won't have a vehicle, I guess "nearby" would be defined as walking, Uber/Lyft, public transportation, or maybe a ride from a classmate. Favorite restaurants would probably be along the lines of pizza, seafood, & sushi, and that would apply to me & the missus if we have a chance to visit. Maybe throw in a steak restaurant as well. Thanks again to everyone! ETA: Well, it looks like cuts to the school's funding have put a halt to the studies. My kid has been told that they are first in line if the school gets any funding. We'll see how it goes... |
