Well. How's this for intuition? We got a full 1.5" of rain over the course of about 30 minutes. After it slows down, I grab an umbrella, muck boots, and floaties and wade up to the chicken coops. Madeline, of course, stayed out and partied while the automatic coop door closed, so she's perched on the roosting bar I have in the run, drenched and looking miserable. I move her into the coop, do a quick head count to verify that there are 23 chickens, lock up the coop, and head back to the house. I get back to the house, take off my boots, stow the umbrella, and cannot shake the feeling that something is wrong up at the coops, I must have forgotten to latch or lock the door on one of the coops or something. I put my boots back on, grab the flashlight, and start walking back up the hill (luckily the rain had completely stopped and I didn't need the umbrella). On my way up the hill, I noticed I was seeing a lot more bush in the beam of the flashlight than should be on that part of the property. Then I realize I'm not lighting bushes up with the flashlight. I'm lighting up the 3' diameter 75' long bough of a large water maple that had fallen sometime between me leaving the coops and getting to the house. I must have heard it, but presumably thought it was thunder due to the lightning of the storm moving away to the east. The bough missed the chicken coops by literally about five feet. |
