Hi, looking for some quick advice / information. My father has passed away and has a few firearms. I am reading that pistols need to be turned in to the police within 15 days? I do not live in NY so I don’t think I’m able to take possession of the pistols? Am I able to ship from myself to myself from NY to TX? (Doubt it but thought I’d ask) Anyone know a good resource I can talk to about the legality of transferring the firearms? I believe the rifles I can possess and drive cross country? Am I able to gift firearms to my cousins in Ny? Thanks in advance. |

Some allow the pistols to be taken to FFLs, where they can help facilitate transfers (inter or intra-state). I just read about this 15 day thing and trying to figure out what I can legally do. I’d hate for them to get destroyed when I have a cousin up there I could give them too but it seems NY law is pretty strict. I didn’t know if a Trooper would show up on day 16 to collect and try to jail me. |
| Do not call the county pistol permit office it is likely they will notify the local sheriff's dept. who will show up and take possession of the pistols. Have a representative of the estate deliver them to a friendly local NY FFL who can arrange to legally ship them to your FFL. Too many times firearms that end up in the custody of LEO agencies disappear, particularly if they are valuable. |

What kind of rifles and where in NYS? The executor is authorized to retain handguns for a couple of weeks, but no one really holds the executor to that exact length of time in my part of the state If it's an "evil assault rifle" that was registered for the unSAFE act they can legally only be transferred to an FFL or a LEO Otherwise, unless it's a downstate county, no one's going to care about long guns edit: I see that location was answered |

Hi all. Probably the most “evil” rifle would be the M1 carbine (universal). Tube fed 22 mag and tube fed 22LR are the other semi rifles. Cousin has a local FFL that is going to transfer them out to Texas once we’re done with the services. Received the certificate today and located his permit. Thank you for the help. |
