In the beginning of an interview process for what would be my dream career or damn close to it. What should I know about Duluth (besides it is cold right now)? Anything to be aware of or avoid? Reasons you like living there, etc. I know your governor sucks (mine does too "move to a free state blah blah blah")... Thanks! |

Superior, Wisconsin is right next to Duluth. Might be a better option 2A wise. Weather in Duluth is kind of weird. There can be a difference between weather up on top and weather down by the water. The steep roads can be a challenge in the winter. Nice view of the lake though. Still kind of blows me away when Superior first comes into view driving up 35 from the south. |

I was also looking at houses online in Superior. Looks like I would be hosing myself on taxes though, it seems like WI has higher property tax and working in MN I would be subject to their higher income tax. Unsure if the 'rebate' one gets on MN income tax living in WI covers all the WI income tax or I am paying two states? If someone has done the working in MN living in WI thing I would be interested to hear how that works. MN's gun laws are lot better than CO's by the way, in general. Fight the preemption removal tooth and nail, CO is back to being a patchwork of regulations

| Overall, Duluth is a pretty nice place. Lots of beautiful scenery, generally friendly people, nice weather for 3/4 of the year or so. Winter is cold, but you are used to that. As previously mentioned it is a liberal city run by liberals, so you have some of the issues you'd expect. You'll see some homeless/druggies/weirdos downtown, not unlike other cities of its size. There are lots of outdoor things to do and see, good restaurants, etc. I wouldn't hate living there. |

I've lived here in Duluth for 17 years now. It is a liberal city but overall not a bad place to live. It's a 2 hour drive to the Twin Cities if you have a need to go there, and easy access to some beautiful sightseeing/hiking up the shore, or plenty of woods to play around with if you head north. It's a large enough city to have most of what you need for stores but not so big you're dealing with traffic. Up on the hill is nice, right in the heart of downtown there's a lot of homelessness and drug use, but if you keep to yourself, relatively safe. There's petty crime if you don't lock your stuff up. Thanks for the info. I have been looking into the tax situation, it looks like I have to file in both states but if I lived in WI they (WI) give me a rebate for what I pay to MN to avoid double taxation. It does seem that property taxes in WI are significantly higher. Sales tax is 3% or so lower it seems (Superior vs Duluth), I guess I need to run the math on my spending to see if that balances out. FWIW sales tax in Colorado Springs CO is 8.2% and can be around 9% in some 'special' districts. Another wrinkle is I homeschool. MN's homeschool laws are kind of annoying. I do keep records far above and beyond what is required in CO and they would satisfy my reading of the MN statute, but right now we only do standardized testing evey other year starting at 3rd grade, whereas MN has a lot more reporting requirements and requires standardized testing annually, plus immunization records. WI is much better on their regs, basically just notification of the state annually on a form and that's it. Lot to think about. I guess one has to decide whether the higher taxes are worth more liberty. If MN is already lost to the left like CO is, but there is still hope in WI maybe it is better to live and vote there... |

I just moved from 45 minutes outside of Minneapolis to 30 minutes outside of Duluth. It's a great area. Property values are soaring. We get almost daily harrassement from realtors wanting to buy our acreage. Duluth is liberal, yes, but it's a well run city. It doesn't have that woke feeling that Minneapolis has. I don't feel unsafe anywhere I go. Duluth is growing up, while Minneapolis falls down. Duluth has recently built two new hospitals so health care access is great. There isn't much for indoor activities, but unlimited access to anything outdoor that you'd want. Don't to go Superior, it's a dump compared to Duluth. We home schooled our kids, there is yearly testing requirements, but I never heard of immunization requirements. |

Get involved in a homeschool coop and the people will help you navigate the requirements. When we homeschooled we always had some exemption for the vaxx as we were anti-vacxxers at the time. Think it was religious. Duluth is one of our favorite places to visit in the State. We stay on mn side and superior side and Superior is a dump, but some people like living in first world shitholes. I think you will find that even if you stay in superior most of your purchases will be in Duluth or online so figure that and transpo in your costs. Both states are one election away from dem control, the WI supreme court flipped dem a few years back. Mn should go first and we have thought about moving to WI due to this and know people who have. Most of WI along the border seems to work in MN. |
