PCSing for Kirtland soon and looking to buy a house within 45-50 minutes of the base. Anyone a realtor in the area or know a friendly one? |

No realtor info, but do you have an idea of where you want to live? The commute time you've listed basically allows you to live anywhere from Rio Rancho, to Albuquerque proper, east mountains, or Los Lunas. I will say that traffic and one accident can definitely impact that commute...turning a standard 30-45 minute commute into a two hour ordeal if bad enough. I live in northern Rio Rancho and going in early enough (6am) is a pretty quick commute on I-25 and I-40, maybe 35 minutes. On the way home, that can be an hour or more with heavy traffic. |

Usually a fair amount cooler than Albuquerque, you'll get snow when Albuquerque doesn't, and it doesn't feel like you're living in the desert. If you like or can handle snow it would be a great place to live, if you don't like snow then you should look somewhere else. And when it does snow....it isn't like you'll have snow for weeks on end. You could have snow for a few hours or a few days depending on the storm and conditions afterwards. The canyon pass (I-40) will close if weather is bad enough and accidents occur, so keep that in mind. If it wasn't for the location of the wife's job we would have looked at living in the east mountains. You can look at all those areas. Edgewood, Cedar Crest, Tijeras, etc. The one thing I'm not completely sure about is the water situation. Some homes may be on individual wells, some might be on community wells. I haven't heard of people running wells dry out there, but it has happened in other areas of the state. |
