What they were exaggerating is a phenomenon called "frost cracking", which is a very real thing. But it's not an "explosion". Anyone with any experience of deer hunting in below zero temps has heard the trees "popping" from the sap freezing, expanding, and splitting the wood. Some are as loud as a gun shot. The real loud ones occur when you're in a ladder stand on a maple tree, it's 7am and -10, and the maple tree you're leaning against decides to "pop". That happened to me in the mid 90s. Scared the living shit out of me. I thought my rifle fired itself. I was covered in bits & pieces of bark, and there was a very visible crack in the tree trunk, starting about 3' over my head and running up another 6-7'. I moved my stand to another tree later that day... after I went home and put on clean underwear...
