Hey LAS folks, Going to be moving to the area in a couple of weeks. My family and I will be back-and-forth over the coming months, maybe longer. Going to rent a place from a guy at work so I don't have to commute as much. Maintaining KS DL, CCH, and residency. We plan to be outdoors a bit when the weather allows. My wife and I went on a hike in Mount Charleston today. It was beautiful! Had some questions about guns to bring with me. I'm planning to bring one just-in-case cheapish AR (not for hiking, just to have at the house), and a Glock 43X for my EDC. I want one other pistol with a little more capacity/capability for 4-legged and 2-legged predators. Saw a sign warning of mountain lions. Anything else out this way, like bears? I initially thought I'd bring another 9mm (Glock 19, Beretta 92) for common caliber reasons, but now I'm thinking a larger caliber might be warranted. For those in the know, what do you suggest? .40? 10mm? I was thinking of grabbing a LEO trade in Glock 23 for cheap, but thought I'd get the opinions of those out in this area. Thanks! |

I'd be more concerned about rattle snakes than anything else-- as in pay attention to your surroundings and avoid them. Welcome to the state!  Yeah, I hear you on the snakes. I hope not! Haha. That being up North here, in my area at least, I've seen never seen a rattle snake (but I know more than a few people who have) and I see a lot of wildlife. Once again, be safe and enjoy the desert. If you haven't been to Death Valley or Zion, they're worth the drive. |

Late to the party, but 9mm is more than enough for anything out here. As for snakes- I'm outside in the wilderness maybe 5 of 7 days for the better part of the five years that I've lived here. I've seen a grand total of two snakes, neither a rattler. One mountain lion in the woods around ~7k ft that couldn't get away from me fast enough. Cactus literally worry me more than anything else. |
