Howdy, Title sort of says it all... Family likely moving from TX to PA this summer. I'm using Hershey as a place holder for the general area east of Harrisburg (Hershey, Annville, Palmyra, Lebanon, etc)... my son plays hockey and we are wanting to be in that area. Looking for general guidance... recommendations on places to live? Places to avoid? Same question for school districts etc. Hit me! Thanks in advance, - Ryan |

Pennsylvania is to be avoided. I escaped there years ago. High taxes, taxes on anything that moves, and doesn't move. Roads are among the worst in the nation. Beware the sewer BS. PA is on a mission to get most on a public sewer system....even in more rural areas. I got caught on that scam and was paying $100 A MONTH for sewer. Not to mention......the weather sucks as much as the political corruption does. PA public pension trust fund was, when I escaped, 9,000,000,000 in debt and climbing. You will pay a tax to work, a tax to your local municipality, the state and the feds. You will pay school property tax and then you will also pay another school tax that is "everyone has to pay." Want a propane delivery, better be ready to pay the state a tax for that. Want a copy of your vehicle title, that will cost you upwards of $100. I got a tax bill for the street light in front of my house that I hated and never ordered. I could go on.... Gun rights are okay but will fall well short of what you are accustomed to in TX. |

Click Lewis Center in Palmyra for hockey, although now most of the Schools have a Hockey club. Palmyra or Lower Dauphin School districts are pretty good. Central Dauphin, Harrisburg, Steelton-Highspire schools to be avoided. |

I like the area. Wouldn't live in Dauphin county just because of taxes and politics. See what you can find in Lebanon county. I worked around the greater Harrisburg area for a decade. Will be moving back to PA soon. Pennsylvania has the township system. This usually defines your school district. The upside to this is your kids go to that school, they won't get bussed around to another school, and your local vote affects school superintendent appointments. The down side is that your small geographic area has to fully fund the school by your taxes and they are significantly higher than state taxes. This school tax may not appear on your home purchase estimations for mortgage payment so ask your realtor to be sure if you're on a tight budget. The greater Harrisburg area has lowest unemployment in the state because there's lots of jobs, anyone who wants to work has a job. |

Just throwing in my 2 cents because we moved back to central PA last summer after living in the midwest for 9 years and I'm cranky... We moved back to be closer to family but, dang, there are very, very few positives to PA: The weather sucks. This feels like it has been the longest winter ever. Gun trading sucks. Want to swap handguns? Be ready to pay an FFL $50 for the privilege. (I know, there are cheaper ones out there, but that's the going rate here). Taxes suck. Holy cows. I'd swear there's a tax in every neighborhood for every thing. Income tax, per capita tax, and who knows what else. Culture sucks. We got used to "midwest nice" where people are generally polite and friendly. Central PA has the most backward, clannish, and rude people to be found anywhere. Rant off. Good luck with your move! |

Lebanon County used to have lower taxes then Dauphin County (where Hershey is located), but they're starting to creep up. Word of warning about the Hershey and Palmyra locations.. you may have to worry about sinkholes depending on where you're looking. Some areas are prone, some are not, depending on the geology. Do your homework ahead of time, or ask your realtor. |

I'm about 30 to 35 minutes driving time to Hershey PA. Find something that is a little North, South, East or West of Hershey, proper. Traffic can be Nutz during Rush Hours. On the other hand:  10 Reasons To Visit HersheyPark In 2025 - Pennsylvania's BEST Theme Park! |
