If you shank someone even in self-defense, you're going to jail. It's Montreal, so a cop could arrest you if you can open it one handed or you could be arrested just because you're English  I'm in Montreal on a pretty regular basis (last week and back again Monday) and have never had any issues with having a knife, but your mileage may vary.
