Looking at a few different routes to get from Miles City to Aberdeen and one of them is Hwy. 12 from Thunder Hawk to Mobridge. Can't find any info online other than this State of Emergency Declaration by the tribe: Tribal Roads State of Emergency The other option would be I-94 through Bismark. I prefer non-interstate routes when possible. Is Hwy. 12 across the res safe? Any info would be greatly apprecaited. |

I’ve never had any problems on any of the rez’s in the Dakotas. I have accounts that I currently service or have serviced on basically all of them. I’m a white boy and only got turned away from the Cheyenne River one during their covid lockdown (wouldn’t let me drive through even). I had to drive around it through Standing Rock and they didn’t give a shit. I’ve been around some of the most down to earth people on the rez’s. As long as you don’t start any shit, you won’t have any problems. Watch out for some crappy roads and drive the speed limit. The Taco Johns in Eagle Butte is good for fast food. If you want to hear a funky accent, stop in the Turtle Mountain rez and listen to the frost-back/Indian accent, lol! |
| I'd be fine driving 12 through Standing Rock. Top off in Lemmon and head on through to Mobridge. You can always take a stop in McIntosh or McLaughlin. Just be aware though that according to SD511 there is construction on 12. |

Thanks for all the info. Ended up staying north of the res. On the way back south I could have gone through Pine Ridge but decided to avoid it. Sounds like it may be the worst one in SD, and generally unsafe. It adds about an hour to avoid it so I’m wondering if my assessment is correct. I need to go back to South Dakota in October and going through Pine Ridge is certainly more direct but easily avoidable if that’s prudent. |

So long as you're not out there "exploring" the backroads or being disrespectful, I'm pretty confident that you'd be fine. I think that everyone should see Pine Ridge. |

Stopped for gas in Pine Ridge just once in my life when travelling on US18. Fucker came and was asking for money, and then was trying to get in the car. I try to start no shit at any time but had to get aggressive with that dude and couldn't get out of there fast enough. Drove through dozens of times otherwise with no problems (other than covid when they wouldn't let us drive through), just plan your gas stops to avoid stopping in their territory. Be respectful on the road but also understand there are issues with substance abuse, so many other cars on the road are operating impaired, so be alert. If you pay attention to the violent crime in SF for long enough, certain last names seem to pop up rather regularly. Not hard to trace their roots - or imagine how many others are operating as they please with very little law enforcement in the rez. That being said, never travel without your protection. My favorite drive through the state to the Hills is SD HWY 44 which takes you smack dab through the middle of them, it's worth it for the serenity of the drive. I90 =  |

Agressive begging is nothing on the rez. You're lucky it was a single person. It's a good bet others were watching. Sometimes the panhandling is a test. Fail that test and a knife is commonly the next test. |

In 2022 we still lived in RC and a friend of my wife's, who her and her husband are FBI agents, had an experience on the Pine Ridge. He was kidnapped by 3 people and taken out to the Badlands by Wall where they were going to execute him. He managed to escape at the gas station in Wall and they were eventually caught. Turns out they were Cartel. They were tried, convicted and sentenced. None of them survived more than a couple of months and the cartel had gotten them. Moral of the story, avoid the Rez. |
