We are headed up today from the Sunshine State. Going to stay about a week. This is where my family is originally from and where my Dad and his brothers were born and raised in the 1930s. We are going up to relax mainly but also do some fact finding on communities, since we are considering retiring an a year in the area. It is on the short list for our golden years. I have read the Corbin - London Thread multiple times and appreciate that insight. Those areas seem very nice but since my family has deep roots in McCreary and Pulaski....kinda feel drawn to what feels like home. We have worked hard all our lives, took a few oaths including .mil and ready to escape FL heat, taxes and growth. So what we are mainly looking at is Pulaski, McCreary, Whitley maybe Wayne...but dont want to be too close to the Cumberland Houseboat tourism. Not opposed to Corbin down to state line either....just not real familiar and trying to keep from any rapid growth. The Missus and I desire the following: -No Urban areas -Very little growth-development -Very red political area -Profound lack of DEI, thugs, gangstas, vibrant flash mobs, etc. -Lack of foreign languages being yelled loudly back and forth when we go to the IGA/Kroger to buy provisions -Within 30-40 min drive to IGA/Kroger/Med facility/Super Walmart -Lack of foreign languages being spoken loudly back and forth when we go to the above to buy provisions -high deer population if possible. We would be looking for min of 5 acres and up to whatever, with a decent home, etc. ($450K max) Some pasture to bush hog, hay, maintain is ok but mainly woods if possible. I dont mean to come off cocky in what we desire in the above list and I do understand the methbilly possibilities....as I think that the some of the areas we come from have a good bit of it in pockets, and my wife is greatly distressed by areas that are "littered up". There are no perfect areas I guess....but I could be very wrong. We greatly covet any advice and input and thank you in advance.

I'm on the Harlan-Bell line, so not terribly far from the area you're looking at. At a 450k budget you're thinking small. That is very much in the 100-200+acre range. The further east you go, into the more mountainous areas you will definitely encounter less potential for growth. We don't have gangsters in the traditional sense, just crackhead hillbillys. A lot of this area is a zone 4 for deer hunting, so not huge populations since there's very little Ag, but a fella can pretty reliably take a couple a year if he puts in the work. |
| Appreciate it Maddmatt. Solid house with more acres the better. I guess construction of a small new home is crazy expensive like anywhere these days. We had a good trip. Hung out with my cousins over in McCreary and discussed it as well. I was reminded of the steep area around McCreary and over your way when we drove around. We are probably looking for a mix of woods and ag. As for gangsters, I was actually meaning like, inner city thug life peoples. |
