My wife and I are considering meeting her parents somewhere for a long weekend somewhere in WNC. She wants to go to Maggie valley to get into GSMNP without having to deal with Gatlinburg, but her dad is convinced it’s a post-apocalyptic wasteland after Helene. What’s the real story? Is it still a mess or does he need to stop looking at google street view from November 2024? |

Depending on your route, the biggest headache you will encounter is I-40 through the gorge. It is down to 1 lane in each direction. This is from the TN side about 5 miles from the state line and on the NC side for about 20 or so miles, at least. MV is at exit 20. As for the rest of the area MV was not hit near as hard as east of there. I doubt you will notice much other than I-40. If on I-40 in that stretch and there’s a wreck, you’re screwed as there is more or less no other side road to get around it once you’re on the interstate. ETA: if your goal is the GSMNP, then you need to go from MV to Cherokee, which might be your plan. You can access the GSMNP at MV by going in at Cataloochee. But let me warn you, going in at Cataloochee is not for the feint of heart. The road up and over the mountain from MV into the entrance at Cataloochee is rough, narrow and dusty and hanging off the edge of the mountain . A lot of horse trailers go in there as there are horse legal areas in the Cat valley. Meeting them on the way in or out sucks. Now don’t get me wrong, the Cataloochee valley is absolutely gorgeous and it is like a mini Cades Cove, but be prepared for the travel up and down into the valley. Cherokee is a much easier route with more traffic, but not anything like Gatlinburg. You will see very likely quite a few elk as they are in that area all on the NC side. |

Yeah we’ve come through that section of 40 a bunch headed back home to the beach, it’s not great. Glad to hear Maggie Valley didn’t get hit too hard. Is the road into cataloochee still closed? We went up there probably four or five years ago and loved it but I had heard it got pretty beat up in the storm. |

ETA: I just checked the parks website, it appears to be open right now. Best check again before coming here. But again, the road even at its best is not that great. I can’t convey enough how dicey it gets as it nears the top of the mountain. If one goes off it, you will go down a few hundred feet until you lodge against a tree. There is no guardrail on this road. |
