There’s a job opening in my field in Clarksburg. I’ve never been to WV but I’ve visited a bit of Appalachia in TN and NC and enjoyed that area. Also would love to get out of the big city. Tell me about life in WV. I’d be looking to live in the Fairmont area since it’s not terribly far from Clarksburg and Morgantown. Not even set on applying for the gig because of the stigmas that many outsiders probably associate with WV - poor economy, lots of meth/fentanyl. How much truth is there to that? I’m a single dude in my late 30’s, enjoy hiking and snowboarding as well as a few nerdy hobbies - would be looking to date, how much opportunity for that is there? |

Clarksburg is probably the most depressing small city in the state. Yet, Fairmont is ultra modern with a lot of money. Morgantown is both modern and old at the same time, dirty, hilly, poorly laid out. The whole area is my least favorite part of the state. I would get some place 15 min outside of any of the cities, so you can visit for shopping, but not deal with the city limits issues. Maybe check out Bridgeport. |

OP...Fairmont real estate is more reasonable than Morgantown or Bridgeport. For boarding, small hills about an hour away at WISP in W MD, 7 Springs in W PA or Canaan Valley in WV. Bigger hills in south east WV at SnowShoe. Lots & lots of amazing hiking & MTBing trails everywhere. If you want something less intense, miles & miles of reclaimed railroad turned into rails to trails. Fentanyl & meth are a problem. Big homeless community in Morgantown, probably Fairmont & Clarksburg too. Decent shopping, dining, WVU college sports in Morgantown-football is big, people are, for the most part, nice & welcoming. If you want to go the next set up, Pittsburgh is an hour up the road, pro sports, true fine dining, arts, shopping, concerts, festivals & events. Pittsburgh might be described as "ultra modern", Fairmont not so much. Good luck on your decision, happy to answer any questions via PM. |

North Central WV is growing by leaps and bounds. I worked and went to school there over 25 years ago and it is nearly unrecognizable since then. Stay along the 70 corridor or venture inward a little and look at properties off Rt. 250 that are quiet but close to everything. Especially rural Taylor Co. near Bridgeport. |
