My son got his first speeding ticket yesterday. He's 20. I'm a little surprised it took him this long. I'm less surprised (but still disappointed) that he managed to hit 36 over, 91 in a 55. Aggravated speeding, it's a Class A misdemeanor. He was pulled over by the Bureau County SO, and has a court appearance in Princeton the first week of April. We're looking for a lawyer, but so far mostly just leaving voicemails. I'm here looking for lawyer recommendations, advice, stories, etc. Since it's a misdemeanor, it's punishable by up to 12 months in jail, up to $2,500 in fines, and court costs. He has no prior record of any kind. What should we expect from the court? What should we expect to pay the lawyer? |

Much will depend on the prosecutor and your attorney being in that court room on a regular basis. I would look for someone that specializes in DUI. They know how to punch holes in the cops testimony. Probably not much to do on a speeder but you never know. Still see mistakes with the radar certs all the time. A lot of "traffic attorneys" just take the first deal offered by the prosevutor which is usually the same deal you would get if you showed up without the attorney. Most likely it's a plea to a lesser offense and a massive fine, traffic school, etc. He will be fine but this will be very expensive. |

I am sure you have already had a long talk with him, but I hope he understands that driving is a privilege, and not a right, and life is going to be VERY hard if he permanently loses his license, which is probably the best case scenario if he keeps driving like that. I hope the gravity of the potential charges helps him understand why he should be following the speed limit. Good luck, and hope he comes out of this OK. Sven Manticore Arms |

My knucklehead son did 50+ in a 35 zone. My USAA insurance went up $1000/year. I am now with Allstate. If you have USAA auto please look at other insurance companies, they are way way overpriced. Best of luck with your son. Hope it doesn't cost you too much. |
