Good morning all, I’m considering looking for work in AK, and thought this might be a good spot to ask for some local advice of companies to apply with, and info on the current rental housing markets. I’d probably be looking for something utilizing the following credentials and experience: - Class A CDL with Hazmat, Tank, and Triples. - Able Seafarer w/BST, PSC, RFPNW and VPDSD. - prior experience operating heavy equipment, commercial trucks, etc Thanks in advance! |

If you got a Class A CDL you can apply for a state highway department job. I'm a DOT section foreman for a remote gravel road, and we're always short handed. If you're interested, DM me, and I'll shoot you the details DOT pay is decent, but it doesn't pay as good as the private sector, but we have excellent benefits and three day weekends every week for playing, resting, or whatever. The big question is, are you single? Women don't like Alaska, but some will put up with it if they love their man enough. And, do you like winter? Would you like 8 months of it every year? Can you handle weeks at a time of -50 or colder? If you're unsure about any of that, I'd recommend a summer seasonal job, until you get it out of your system. Alaska really isn't for most people. |

Bering Marine is the barge service that moves goods or items to when needed to remote villages, mines, construction sights, Knik construction is a heavy construction company that specializes in Alaska projects, (airstrips in the middle of nowhere, sea walls, mine/oil stuff). As the guys have already said, lots of trucking jobs up here. A lot of the haul road jobs can be extremely dangerous though, there are a couple fatalities a year doing it. But it pays a ton of money for it. Worst case Odom and the other distributors have trucks doing nightly doubles from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Buddy of mine does that, the buddy doing the haul road called it quits after ~10 years or so. |

Bumping the thread as I haven’t gotten anywhere across numerous applications/interviews. The Alaska Marine Highway doesn’t pay remotely in the ballpark of industry standard salaries. Bering Marine allegedly has open positions (for which I am well credentialed) but they won’t get back to me. Other companies or fishing vessel owners have either ghosted, not wanted to discuss salary, or some other flakiness. Figured I’d check in and see if there are any further suggestions. |
