hey all, thinking about taking a shorter term job in the Davenport area, kinda of on the north side of the street up the hill. My family lives in GA and I'm not looking to move them, but would likely stay up there 6 months-a year. I'm curious about the general cost of living. I'm seeing 1 bed apartments in the ~$1K A a month area which doesn't seem crazy. I'd likely look for something mostly furnished but potentially spartan, as I'm trying to save up as much cash as possible in the short term  I know some areas closer to the river there are dicey but didn't know about the rest of the town and what y'all thought overall. Not sure if it will happen, but wanting to keep my options open. Wife and kids do not want to live there permanently, it's too cold and too tornado-y for us but willing to work a stretch if I can and it turns out worthwhile. I have a 4x4 SUV and would be willing to drive up with a load of supplies, but would likely fly back and forth a few times to visit family. I think I'd be fine with my GA CCW (especially since it's constitutional there now?) and would be sad but OK with not bringing much more than that, and seldom visiting ranges. I know crossing over to Illinois pretty much makes me a felon even thinking about it. |

Depending on what part of GA you are coming from, reference the cost you are use to could be hirer or lower but I would go with "reasonable" as a descriptive way to explain cost for most part. Davenport is really spotty on good vs bad parts, things can go south in a short distance and bad spots are located all over town. Think putting the Lions and Hyaenas in the same cage as the ghazel and zebras to save money. Some might only be a few blocks in size but their impact can be noticeable. For most part, south of Locust St you are on your own LOL. There are some very awesome neighborhoods but not sure if they will have the living arrangements you are looking for. If you are going to be working on the North side of Davenport, or anywhere for that matter, look north in Eldridge or Long Grove for a place to live. That drive is easy and quick to and from D'port. There might be a few good options in D'port but you would need to know the area good to make that determination. If you are wanting to stay in the city proper I would look in Bettendorf 1st but again apartments can be good or bad anywhere. I had a saying when I was in that area working which was, "No tax payers were hurt during this incident". This use to always be true up to a couple of years ago when some poor guy getting fuel got between two car loads of Biden supporters and one car load got disrespected by the other and the uninvolved guy got hit in the cross fire (he lived). I havent heard of the drive up robberies being a thing like you would be use to when fueling in Atlanta and surrounding areas, but still pick your locations when in D'port wisely either way. Great restaurants and bars and things to do. New public range out by McCausland. Gun culture is strong, lots of firearm manufactures within a short drive. Plenty of good people who will be friendly and helpful. Airport is on the IL side but it is very nice, small and easy to get through. Multiple non stop flight options to ATL on Delta. Overall it is a good area, but a river town with some big city problems time to time. Dont let some miles turn you away from a good place to live, drive times are much easier than the ATL area or anywhere in GA. Our roads are wide, flat, straight and fast compared to down there. |
