We are going to be in Oahu next month for five days. I would like to take a day trip to the Volcanos National Park on the Big Island, but want to avoid the standard "tourist trip" that takes you to the macadamia factory, the coffee plantation, etc. I contacted Gray Line in hopes of finding something simple but they are not operating at 100% yet. Anyone know of a simple, affordable tour? Mainly looking for transport without the stops at the tourist traps. Definitely not interested in a helicopter tour. GF was born on Oahu (grew up in Wahiawa) so she knows her way around there, but she's never been to see the volcanoes. |

There are two National Parks in Hawaii, but neither is on Oahu. That park is called Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Interestingly, all the volcanic activity in Hawaii is from one "hot spot" in the mantle that's pluming up. As the Pacific plate moves to the Northwest, new places on crust receive outpourings of lava, which created the individual islands. The Big Island in now over the hot spot, which is why it's still active, while the volcanoes on Maui, Oahu, Kauai are dormant / dead. |

I know there's no national park (and no active volcano) in Oahu. We will be in Oahu. We want to go to the Volcanoes Nat Park. Looking for transportation/tour w/out the bells and whistles. BTW, there are 5 national parks on the Big Island. |

Go where you want and stop when you want. drive from ohau to big island is rather wet...bring scuba gear i only did a "one day" trap from oahu to maui and back....it sucked... and this was BEFORE TSA just too much goofing around to enjoy it. if anything do a overnight or more and yes-- car rentals are tarded right now. we are getting a POS chrysler 300 for 1k....for a week... |
